LAWRENCE COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) – According to the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office, ten college students from outside the state found themselves stranded by floodwaters in the Bankhead National Forest on Sunday morning.
Around 7 a.m., officials stated that the Lawrence County 911 center got an urgent call reporting that ten college students from another state were stuck due to escalating floodwaters during a hike in the Bankhead National Forest.
The Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office Swift Water Rescue Team along with their Search and Rescue Team were dispatched for the mission. Given the large number of people affected, the Multi-Agency Search Team was additionally activated.
The assisting agencies comprised the Lawrence County EMA, Morgan County Rescue Squad, Lawrence County Rescue Squad, Huntsville Cave Rescue, and Fisher Rescue Squad.
The rescue teams swiftly located the stranded hikers. Upon evaluating the situation, they determined that a water-based rescue would be too risky because of significant debris in the swollen waters.
Alternatively, the rescue teams employed rope rescue equipment to reach them and successfully saved all 10 individuals.
No one was hurt. Sheriff Max Sanders advises everyone to review the weather conditions prior to embarking on a hiking trip and ensure that somebody is aware of both your itinerary and whereabouts beforehand.
