A Journey from Resource Management to Tech Innovation
Salam Lawal, a Nigerian based in the United Kingdom, has carved out a successful career in the technology sector. With expertise in web development, search engine optimization (SEO), and software automation, he is the founder of Imaiger, a company that has worked with international clients like OGAds. In an interview, he shares insights into his journey, challenges, and vision for the future.
From Resource Management to Technology
Lawal’s academic background was in resource management, but his passion for technology emerged early. He initially pursued agriculture before pivoting to computer science during his national service (NYSC) posting, where he taught computer science. This experience solidified his interest in technology, leading him to become a self-taught developer. His transition was not about job availability in resource management, but rather a personal decision to follow his true calling.
Acquiring Tech Skills and Shaping a Career
Lawal’s tech journey began with curiosity and a desire to build. After graduating, he taught children computer science and later moved into digital marketing. Realizing the need for deeper technical skills, he turned to YouTube tutorials and hands-on project building. He learned HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and NodeJS, eventually creating Imaiger. This journey has shaped his perspective on life and society, reinforcing his belief in technology as a driver of progress.
Relocating to the UK: Opportunities and Growth
Two years ago, Lawal relocated to the UK, seeking global opportunities. While Nigeria played a crucial role in his growth, the move allowed him to connect with the global tech ecosystem. The past two years have been transformative, with invitations to conferences, collaborations with tech leaders, and contributions to major companies like Colgate and DHL. These experiences have accelerated his work and impact.
Imaiger: A Platform for AI-Generated Images
Imaiger, Lawal’s startup, was born from the need to organize AI-generated images. Launched after Stable Diffusion’s release in 2022, the platform helps creators, founders, and marketers access and manage AI images for content marketing. Specializing in front-end development using JavaScript, TypeScript, React, and Next.js, Imaiger has received recognition, including the Best AI-Powered Visual Content Platform award at the 2025 UK Midlands Enterprise Awards. Lawal also mentors young developers in Nigeria, supporting their growth in the tech ecosystem.
Solving Societal Problems Through Technology
Imaiger addresses the challenge of content creation by making AI-generated images accessible, reducing barriers for creators in emerging markets. Other tools like Daily Followers, a social media management platform for TikTok, further enhance workflow efficiency and inclusivity. These solutions empower underserved communities and transform how people engage with digital content.
Addressing Technology Challenges in Nigeria
Lawal identifies two pressing issues in Nigeria: the gap between local talent and global opportunities, and the need for AI education. He envisions a platform connecting Nigerian developers with international firms, enabling them to earn in foreign currency. Additionally, he would create an AI learning platform with structured roadmaps to equip Nigerians with necessary skills.
Advice for the Nigerian Government
To grow the tech sector, Lawal advises the government to create investment opportunities, organize workshops, and host hackathons. These initiatives can foster collaboration, innovation, and a sustainable tech ecosystem.
Balancing Technology and Human Potential
While some fear technology makes us lazy or threatens job security, Lawal believes it offers more opportunities than challenges. He emphasizes the importance of balance, leveraging technology while being mindful of its impact on mental well-being and livelihoods.
AI and Human Intelligence
Lawal views AI as a tool that enhances human capabilities rather than replaces them. While AI excels in speed and scale, it still relies on human context, judgment, and values. He sees AI as a means to tackle complex challenges, building on the legacy of pre-tech geniuses.
Supporting Local Software Development
Despite Nigeria’s human capital, the country heavily relies on foreign technologies. Lawal advocates for greater awareness and support for local software, urging the government and stakeholders to champion Nigerian-built solutions.
Mentoring the Next Generation
Lawal recently mentored participants in the Skill-Up Tech Camp, a program by A New Thing International Foundation in partnership with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. His role involved guiding frontend development, helping participants grow from beginners to confident builders. The program had a significant impact, with many securing tech roles or launching their own projects.
Challenges and Future Vision
The biggest challenge at Imaiger is accessing talent. Lawal manages this by wearing multiple hats, combining technical and marketing skills. In five years, he envisions Imaiger as a dominant platform in the generative AI image space, both in the UK and globally. He also plans to continue building solutions and mentoring African tech talent.
Advice for Nigerian Entrepreneurs
Lawal advises Nigerian creatives and entrepreneurs to think globally from day one, building for a global audience. He warns against neglecting networking, emphasizing the importance of connecting with others in the ecosystem. Building relationships can open doors and create unexpected opportunities.
