The Ruling APC Supports DSS in Criminal Charges Against Innocent Onukwume

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has publicly supported the Department of State Services (DSS) in its decision to file criminal charges against 27-year-old Innocent Onukwume. He was arrested for allegedly calling for a military coup in Nigeria. However, this decision has sparked significant debate among civil society organizations, who argue that the government’s failures are driving frustrated Nigerians to seek desperate solutions to issues like poverty, insecurity, and poor governance.

The charges against Onukwume were filed before the Federal High Court in Abuja under case number FHC/ABJ/CR/610/2025. These charges stem from posts he allegedly made on his X account, @theagroman, in October 2025. According to reports, the account has since been suspended by X for violating its policies.

The DSS claims that Onukwume’s posts encouraged the removal of the APC, the suspension of the federal government, and support for the military to take over the country. In the charge filed by DSS counsel A.M. Danalami, the prosecution alleged that Onukwume violated Sections 46A(1) and 59(1) of the Criminal Code Act, as well as Section 24(1)(b) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2024 (as amended).

Some of the statements attributed to him include: “A coup in Nigeria is needed. Dispose of the APC, suspend the Nigerian government and join the AES. That is all we need now.” He also allegedly wrote, “It will happen eventually, Nigerian. The military needs your support now! Only they can save this country. The bastard in Aso Rock has basically sold this country to the West, and they run our intelligence apparatus; only the military can reset this country.” Another post reportedly stated, “Tinubu has to go, and the APC has to die for Nigeria to have any semblance of normal life. And if you think your stupid votes can remove Tinubu, I’m here to tell you that you’re a fool.”

Reactions from APC Leaders

Reacting to the situation, Dr Ijeoma Arodiogbu, the APC National Vice Chairman (South-East), described Onukwume’s actions as reckless and dangerous. She warned that calls for the return of military rule threaten the country’s democratic stability. “Any right-thinking person knows that the worst democracy is better than the best military regime,” she said.

Nze Chidi Duru, the Deputy National Organising Secretary of the APC, echoed similar sentiments. He condemned Onukwume’s remarks, describing them as “uncalled for, reckless, and one that ought not to be made in the first instance.” Duru emphasized the importance of acting within the law and cautioned citizens against making inflammatory remarks that could lead to violence or insurrection.

Civil Society Criticizes Government Failures

While the APC supports the DSS, several civil society organizations have criticized the government for failing to address the root causes of public frustration. Juwon Sanyaolu, the National Coordinator of the Take It Back Movement, acknowledged that the group does not support a military coup but argued that the Nigerian government should be held accountable for the developments leading to such calls.

Sanyaolu highlighted the rising cost of living, poverty, and insecurity as key factors contributing to public discontent. “It does not matter the number of people the DSS tries to go after; it will not stop Nigerians from stressing the fact that the government has indeed failed,” he said. He called for the release of Onukwume and urged the DSS to focus on addressing the real problems facing the nation.

Adaramoye Michael, the National Coordinator of Youth Rights Campaign, also criticized the DSS for what he described as “ridiculous charges” and a disregard for human rights. He argued that while a military government may not guarantee a better country, citizens have the right to advocate for the form of government they believe is most appropriate.

Ongoing Concerns About Governance

Onukwume, a resident of Umusayo Layout in Oyigbo Local Government Area of Rivers State, is expected to be arraigned later this week. His case comes amid growing concerns about the state of governance in Nigeria. In October, there were reports of an alleged plot by some military personnel to overthrow President Bola Tinubu’s administration, which triggered widespread outrage.

Senior lawyers, civil society groups, and retired generals warned against any attempt to subvert democracy. Meanwhile, the Defence Headquarters dismissed the reports, stating there was no coup-related detention or plan within the military.
