A Masterclass in Low-Total Defense
In a thrilling display of strategic bowling and tactical brilliance, Biratnagar Kings and Sudurpaschim Royals secured their third consecutive victories in the tournament. Both teams showcased exceptional skill in defending low totals, outperforming the defending champions Janakpur Bolts and Karnali Yaks respectively.
The TU International Cricket Stadium provided a pitch that favored patience and precision. The Kings’ bowlers turned a modest target of 136 runs into an insurmountable challenge for the Bolts, while the Royals managed to restrict the Yaks to 140, preventing them from reaching three digits.
Kings and Bolts: Spinners Take the Lead
Janakpur Bolts, led by West Indies legend Shivnarine Chanderpaul, opted to bowl first after winning the toss. They relied heavily on spinners until the 16th over, with NPL debutant Sangeeth Cooray making an immediate impact. Cooray took two wickets, dismissing openers George Munsey and Lokesh Bam, while Anil Kumar Sah and Lalit Narayan Rajbanshi maintained control without taking any wickets.
Sanjay Krishnamurthi and Aaditya Mahata also contributed with their spin, though Mahata claimed a single wicket. Pacers Kishor Mahato and Rupesh Singh played crucial roles in the first innings, with Singh dismissing Basir Ahamad and Narayan Joshi.
Ahamad and Ranjane formed a vital partnership, helping the Kings reach 131/6. In response, Biratnagar’s skipper Sandeep Lamichhane praised the team’s performance, emphasizing the importance of spinners on the pitch. Lamichhane, who took four wickets, was named Player of the Match and highlighted the team’s resilience despite a low total.
Royals’ Comeback
In the battle between Karnali Yaks and Sudurpaschim Royals, the Yaks started strongly, with skipper Sompal Kami dismantling the opposition’s opening pair. However, the Royals made a strong comeback with the ball, restricting the Yaks to 94 runs.
Kami took three wickets, while Nandan Yadav picked up two. Despite a low target, the Yaks struggled to maintain momentum, losing key wickets early. Arjun Gharti’s efforts were not enough as the Yaks were all out at 94.
Sudurpaschim’s skipper Dipendra Singh Airee was instrumental, scoring 39 off 28 and taking four wickets. Airee praised his team’s ability to bounce back with the ball after a poor batting performance.
