Boynton police shoot, kill machete-wielding man in city park

BOYNTON BEACH — Authorities stated that police fatally shot a man who was wielding a machete in a park on Saturday morning after receiving reports of a nearby domestic disturbance.

The police responded to reports of an argument involving a father and his grown son around 10:45 a.m. on Saturday near the 600 block of Northeast 20th Lane. When officers arrived at Intracoastal Park close to where the incident occurred, they found one man from the disagreement holding a machete, according to statements made by the Boynton Beach Police department.

In an update provided Sunday, law enforcement stated that they attempted to calm the circumstances but requested the individual to relinquish his machete. The man declined, uttering, “Why won’t you shoot? Just do it,” before advancing towards the officers with the weapon according to authorities.

The officers fired at the man and subsequently attempted to save his life. The Boynton Beach Fire Rescue personnel transported the individual to Delray Medical Center, where he ultimately passed away.

The police didn’t provide additional details regarding the shooting incident; however, they mentioned that the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is handling the investigation.

Northbound U.S. 1 from Oyer Park to Gateway Boulevard was closed during the incident.
