highlighted the Seal 05 DM-i, which made its official debut in February.
The latest version combines BYD’s fifth-generation DM hybrid technology with an elegant design and premium amenities.
The Seal 05 DM-i has a price tag of 89,800 CNY (about $13,000) and appeals to consumers looking for efficiency along with state-of-the-art technology. One standout feature is BYD’s sophisticated driver assistance system known as God’s Eye ADAS.
The Seal 05 DM-i adheres to the styling cues of BYD’s Ocean lineup, presenting a fresh and contemporary look. At the forefront, you’ll find wave-like LED headlamps, a trapezoid-shaped black grill, along with a U-shaped air vent—all elements that enhance its sleek and aerodynamic profile.
The car measures 4,780 millimeters (188.2 inches) in length, 1,837 millimeters (72.3 inches) in width, and stands at 1,515 millimeters (59.6 inches) tall, featuring a wheelbase of 2,718 millimeters (107 inches). This makes it somewhat smaller than the Seal 06 DM-i.
At the back, you’ll find a wide LED light strip along with hidden exhaust outlets, giving it an elegant appearance. A small, sleek wing further contributes a dynamic element to its design.
The tailgate features the Seal 05 logo. Buyers have the option to select from gray, white, black, or dual-toned exterior hues. At the front, a triplet of cameras is complemented by extra lenses positioned on the fender areas and side mirrors.
Within, a soothing mix of gray and beige hues creates the ambiance. BYD’s distinctive swiveling floating display along with the rectangular digital instrument panel dominate the space, showcasing the user-friendly DiLink entertainment system.
The D-shaped multifunction steering wheel, crystal gear selector, dual cup holders, and wireless charging pad enhance the driving experience. Physical buttons for key functions improve ease of use while driving.
Luxurious synthetic leather seats ensure comfort during extended trips, while backseat occupants can take advantage of a collapsible armrest complete with cup holders. This vehicle boasts plentiful storage options including door compartments, a glovebox, and an expansive central console. With the rear seating lowered, the initial 508-liter (17.9 cubic feet) trunk space significantly increases.
The fifth-generation BYD DM hybrid system combines a 1.5-liter naturally-aspirated engine with a 120 kW electric motor. This setup ensures smooth shifts between electric vehicle mode and hybrid mode along with impressive acceleration capabilities.
A 15.9 kilowatt-hour blade battery provides an electric-only driving range of up to 90 kilometers (56 miles) based on CLTC standards. When operating in hybrid mode, the vehicle achieves a fuel economy of 33.8 kilometers per liter (79.5 miles per gallon), giving it a combined range greater than 2,000 kilometers (1,243 miles).
The suspension is designed for comfort, efficiently soaking up bumps from the road while keeping stable through turns. The light and agile steering ensures that the Seal 05 DM-i handles very well in city settings.
Upper trim levels include ADAS functionalities such as lane-keep assistance and adaptive cruise control. Nonetheless, navigation-assisted driving capabilities are still being developed.
The God’s Eye ADAS developed by BYD employs 12 cameras, 5 millimeter-wave radar systems, and 12 ultrasonic sensors to provide extensive environmental monitoring. This technology enables functions such as lane keeping, adaptive cruise control, and automatic parking assistance.
In trials, the automated parking feature effectively identified suitable spaces and executed the maneuver with little involvement from the driver. Additionally, a remote parking option controlled via smartphone enhances ease when dealing with challenging parking situations.
Although it might still fall short of the sophistication found in Xpeng’s XNGP or Huawei’s Qiankun 3.0 systems, it demonstrates impressive capability for daily operations.
The Seal 05 DM-i is a perfectly balanced compact car that merges elegant design with effective hybrid technology and intelligent safety measures. With its impressive range of over 2,000 kilometers (more than 1,243 miles), this vehicle is perfect for everyday driving as well as extended journeys.
The cost begins at approximately $13,000, providing great value for financially conscious households. More upscale versions attract technologically inclined motorists with enhanced features.
The Seal 05 DM-i offers a superb combination of efficiency, comfort, and cutting-edge technology, which makes it an attractive option for newcomers to car buying or households looking for a loaded hybrid sedan.
