Drake Maye Shares Insights on 2025 Season, Team Chemistry, and Rookie Impact

During a recent appearance on “WEEI Afternoons,” New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye reflected on his journey as the team’s starting signal-caller and shared thoughts on the upcoming season. The second-year pro touched on several key topics, including his mindset heading into the 2025 campaign, his growing relationship with offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, and his confidence in rookie wide receiver Efton Chism III.

A Different Kind of Energy

Maye has long been known for his leadership on the field, but this year will be different. As the unquestioned starter, he acknowledged that the energy and expectations surrounding him have shifted significantly. Last season, he was still working to prove himself as a backup, which meant he had to carefully balance his preparation and playtime. Now, he’s stepping into the spotlight with a clear role and responsibility.

“I think last year, I was preparing and trying to kind of review the call sheet and hit guys here and there as the backup going into Week 1,” Maye explained. “But when you’re coming out here as the starter, there’s a different kind of juice. You run out there on the first snap, and the guys are looking at you. It’s your huddle and your offense.”

He expressed excitement about the challenge ahead, especially with the support of the home crowd. “There’s always a lot of build-up for Week 1, and I think it’s good to get out there and show out.”

Building Trust with McDaniels

Despite a modest preseason performance, Maye feels confident in his progress with offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels. He emphasized that the relationship between the two is growing stronger each day. “I’m getting more and more comfortable,” he said. “I think coming into Week 1 with the game plan will be a little different from some of the stuff we run in practice, just because you’re studying the defense and figuring out what looks good against them.”

Maye also noted that the focus is now on fine-tuning details and ensuring that he’s prepared for any situation. “For me, it’s going back over things that may seem simple, like protection cues or other plays we haven’t seen yet,” he added.

Managing the Excitement

Maye admitted that part of his up-and-down preseason performance could be attributed to being overly excited at the start of games. He compared it to playing basketball, where it’s important to find a layup before attempting three-pointers. “I think whether it’s a good run with the guys up front or an easy completion, that’s what matters,” he said. “Other than that, it’s just about getting out there and staying calm.”

He also mentioned that using the support of his teammates helps him stay focused. “If they’re pumped up, I’m going to get a little pumped up too, but when I get out there, I need to be cool, calm, and collected.”

Confidence in Efton Chism III

While the pressure is on Maye to lead the offense, he’s also counting on a strong supporting cast, particularly on the receiving end. One player who has stood out during training camp is undrafted rookie wideout Efton Chism III. Maye praised Chism’s work ethic and dedication to earning his spot on the team.

“He’s always in the treatment room,” Maye joked. “I always tell him, ‘Good gosh, you’re the No. 1 treatment guy.’ But that stuff matters. Showing up every day and doing things right gets you on the team and on the field.”

Chism’s efforts have not gone unnoticed. His performance in a recent preseason game, where he shed tackles to score a touchdown, has made him a regular presence in the Patriots’ facilities. Maye believes Chism’s commitment to improvement is a key factor in his success.

Looking Ahead

As the 2025 season approaches, Maye is focused on making the most of his opportunity. With a clear path as the starter, a growing rapport with his coaches, and a talented group of teammates, he’s ready to take on the challenges ahead. His confidence in the team’s depth and determination sets the stage for what could be a transformative year for the Patriots.
