The Story of Faiza Abdulkadir: A Testament to Honesty in Adversity

Faiza Abdulkadir, a cleaner at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), has become an inspiration for many due to her remarkable act of returning N4.8 million that was mistakenly credited to her bank account. Her story is not just about financial integrity but also reflects the resilience and moral strength of individuals facing extreme social and economic challenges.

Faiza earns a modest monthly salary of N30,000, which she uses to support her five children and her aged mother. Despite her struggles, she returned the money out of a deep sense of faith and ethical responsibility. Her actions have sparked conversations across Nigeria, highlighting the importance of honesty even in the face of immense hardship.

A Life Marked by Struggles and Resilience

Faiza’s life has been shaped by numerous challenges. After her husband left for Lagos ten years ago and never returned, she found herself alone in raising their five children. She moved from Lagos to Abuja before eventually returning home to Maiduguri. Her current living conditions are humble—she resides in a makeshift three-bedroom structure made of zinc, located in Gwange ward. The building sits in a flooded area, and the family often sleeps on mats on the floor due to the lack of proper furniture.

Her home has been a refuge since the September 10, 2024 flood disaster that destroyed much of the area. A renowned Islamic scholar, Sheikh Sheriff Saleh Alhussani, provided shelter to her and her family without charge, allowing her children access to education.

Despite these hardships, Faiza remains grateful for what she has. She believes that health is the greatest wealth and expresses her thanks to Allah for keeping her and her family safe.

The Incident That Changed Everything

The turning point in Faiza’s life came when she received a call from a man in Kebbi State who claimed he had mistakenly transferred N4.8 million to her account. Initially, she was overwhelmed by the amount and unsure of how to proceed. However, she refused to take the money, citing her faith and fear of God.

The man pressured her to transfer the funds immediately through a POS operator, but she insisted on consulting her bank first. When the man continued to harass her, she connected him with customer care, where the bank verified the ownership of the money and initiated the transfer.

Faiza faced significant emotional and physical stress during this time. She spent three days without eating properly, traveling to the bank repeatedly to ensure the money was returned. Even after the transfer, the man kept calling, claiming there was still a balance in her account. She sternly warned him not to contact her again, emphasizing that the entire amount had been returned.

Recognition and Support from the Community

Faiza’s story quickly gained national attention, leading to widespread praise and support. The First Lady of Borno State, Dr. Falmata Babagana Zulum, presented her with a cash gift of N1 million as a gesture of appreciation. Zulum described Faiza as a role model for all residents of Borno State.

The state Commissioner for Women Affairs, Zuwaira Gambo, also commended Faiza’s actions, stating that her integrity was rare given her financial circumstances. She announced additional support in the form of vocational equipment and food items.

Another generous individual, who chose to remain anonymous, donated N2.5 million to Faiza. The donation was facilitated by the Da’awah Wal Irshaad Women Organisation, whose president, Aisha Muhammad Aisami, explained that the donor read about Faiza’s story in the Daily Trust and wanted to reward her.

A New Beginning

Faiza expressed deep gratitude for the support she received from people across the country. She described the experience as surreal, saying that she was overwhelmed by the number of donations she received. She also shared her dream of owning a house, which she now believes has been answered by God.

She urged others to fear God and stay true to their values, emphasizing that eternal life should be the focus rather than temporary worldly gains.

Conclusion

Faiza Abdulkadir’s story is a powerful reminder of the impact one person’s integrity can have on a community. Her actions, driven by faith and a strong moral compass, have inspired countless others to reflect on their own values and choices. As she moves forward, her journey serves as a beacon of hope and a testament to the power of honesty in times of adversity.
