A Journey of Resilience and Purpose

Dr. Juliet Agocha, a Nigerian-American tech expert and politician, shares her inspiring story with BIODUN BUSARI. From her childhood aspirations to the challenges she faced growing up, and her current political ambitions, Dr. Agocha’s journey is one of resilience, purpose, and passion for community service.

Why She Is Running for Office

Dr. Agocha is running for the position of councilwoman for District 4 in Prince George’s County Council in Maryland. Her motivation stems from a clear vision: to serve her community and advocate for families. Her political ambition is driven by a desire to create positive change and ensure that every individual has access to the resources they need to thrive.

Leadership Experience

With over 18 years of leadership experience, Dr. Agocha has built a strong foundation in both corporate and nonprofit sectors. As the founder and CEO of Ultimate Tech, a technology company based in Prince George’s County, she has leveraged her expertise to solve real-world problems. During the pandemic, she transformed chaos into innovation, providing essential technology services to those in need.

In addition to her corporate work, Dr. Agocha founded One Voice Empower Her, a nonprofit organization focused on empowering women and girls. She also serves as the Vice Chairperson Policy Council for Early Childhood Education for the Lawyers Centre, further demonstrating her commitment to community development and advocacy.

Campaign Priorities

Dr. Agocha’s campaign is centered around three key priorities:

  • Affordable Housing: Having experienced homelessness firsthand in 2009, she understands the importance of stable housing. Despite efforts over the years, affordable housing programs in Prince George’s County have not significantly improved. Dr. Agocha is committed to addressing this issue and ensuring that no family faces the same struggles she did.

  • Quality Education: She believes that education is the key to preventing youth from falling into trouble. Access to quality education should not depend on a child’s zip code. Dr. Agocha is fighting for equitable educational opportunities for all children in the county.

  • Safe Communities: Crime and chaos continue to plague Prince George’s County, and Dr. Agocha is determined to bring about change. She wants a safe environment where families can thrive without fear.

Supporting Seniors

A significant part of Dr. Agocha’s campaign focuses on supporting seniors. She emphasizes the need for accountability, transparency, and action to ensure that older adults receive the care and respect they deserve. Her initiatives aim to improve healthcare access and create safer neighborhoods for seniors, who have contributed so much to the community.

Overcoming Homelessness

Dr. Agocha recalls her time as a homeless person in 2009. At the time, she was unable to afford a home, which led to a two-week period of sleeping on the streets and squatting with others. She relied on affordable places like McDonald’s and Walmart to survive. A kind stranger eventually helped her find a place to stay, marking a turning point in her life.

Moving to the United States

Dr. Agocha moved to the U.S. at a young age to pursue higher education. She was admitted to the University of Maryland, where she pursued her dreams of success. She credits America for providing her with the resources and opportunities needed to excel. As an immigrant, she is passionate about fighting for the rights and well-being of all families.

Academic Background

Her academic journey began with an associate’s degree in information technology, followed by a master’s in cybersecurity and a PhD in leadership with an emphasis in business management. While she acknowledges her academic achievements, she remains focused on using her knowledge to benefit her community.

Maryland’s Significance

Maryland holds a special place in Dr. Agocha’s heart. She highlights the state’s deep historical roots in African-American culture and its role in the civil rights movement. Maryland offers a vibrant cultural heritage, strong educational foundations, and opportunities for residents to influence national decisions.

Thoughts on Nigeria

As a proud Nigerian, Dr. Agocha recognizes the country’s potential but also points out the challenges it faces. She believes that effective leadership, education, and transparency are essential for Nigeria’s progress. She hopes for leaders who prioritize the needs of the youth and foster trust between citizens and government.
