A Comprehensive Overview of the Healthy Living Initiative in Anambra State

The efforts of the first lady of Anambra State, Dr Nonye Soludo, have significantly transformed the lives of many residents through her “Healthy Living Initiative.” This initiative has become a vital resource for thousands across the state, emphasizing the importance of health and well-being for all. From its inception, the program has consistently focused on ensuring that the health of Ndi Anambra remains a top priority.

During a recent press briefing at the Light House in Awka, the first lady’s representative, Dr Afam Obidike, highlighted the achievements of the initiative. The project, managed by the “Healthy Living With Nonye Soludo” NGO, has yielded tangible results over the past three years. These outcomes are not just promises but real, measurable impacts that can be seen in the lives of individuals and communities.

One of the significant achievements includes the distribution of over 3.8 million insecticide-treated nets to households, providing protection against malaria—a leading cause of illness and death among children and mothers. Additionally, healthy living clubs have been established in more than 800 primary and secondary schools, promoting a culture of wellness among the youth.

The initiative has also made a difference in the lives of women, offering free cervical cancer screening and treatment to thousands. Over 14,000 “Nonye’s Healthy Living Pap” have been distributed to malnourished children across public health care centers, with recovery rates exceeding 50%. Furthermore, free corrective surgeries have enabled children born with cleft lips and palates to smile with dignity.

Other notable accomplishments include nationwide free vaccination campaigns against Rotavirus, Measles, and Polio, safeguarding the future of children. Anti-shock garments are now available to prevent maternal deaths during childbirth, showcasing the initiative’s commitment to saving lives.

The first lady’s office has also engaged with orphanages and special homes, showing compassion to the most vulnerable. Community youth engagements in all 21 LGAs have inspired thousands of young people to lead healthy and productive lives. The state skill women training program, aimed at equipping women with skills in male-dominated fields, has received over 6,000 applications from across the 21 LGAs.

Pad banks have been distributed in over 350 secondary schools, ensuring that girls no longer miss classes due to menstrual challenges. More than 26,000 elderly individuals have received free multivitamin supplements to support healthy aging, while 1,000 persons with disabilities have been enrolled in the Anambra State Health Insurance Scheme, promoting inclusivity.

Lifetime scholarships have been awarded to brilliant indigent children, and over 15,000 packs of hybrid seeds have been distributed to encourage home gardens and food security. The “Healthy Living Schools Garden Competition” has fostered agricultural innovation among students, and awareness of healthy living has spread through market and school outreaches.

A strategic partnership with Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, through the Renewed Hope Initiative, has unlocked opportunities for thousands of NdiAnambra. These achievements underscore the initiative’s impact on the community, touching the lives of mothers, children, the elderly, and persons with disabilities.

Dr Nonye Soludo emphasized the need for continued efforts, encouraging the community to protect this progress and ensure Anambra continues to thrive. She called for unity and collaboration to build a healthier and stronger Anambra, highlighting the importance of addressing menstrual hygiene challenges and ensuring dignified access to sanitary products.

Through these initiatives, the first lady has demonstrated a commitment to improving the quality of life for all residents of Anambra State. Her efforts reflect a deep understanding of the community’s needs and a dedication to creating a healthier future for everyone.
