The Power of Creativity in Shaping the Future

Young people don’t just inherit the future; they create it. Through the inspiring journey of Hellen, we can see how initiatives like the MASK Awards are empowering a new generation of innovators across Kenya and beyond.

The future is not something that simply happens on its own. It is shaped by individuals—especially those with creativity, vision, and the drive to bring their ideas to life. This is why, over a decade ago, the education charity MASK, in collaboration with the Star, launched the MASK Awards. This platform is dedicated to celebrating and nurturing the creative talents of young people in Kenya and around the world.

Since its inception, the MASK Awards have provided thousands of children and youths with a space to showcase their ingenuity, resourcefulness, and passion. The mission of this non-profit initiative is to inspire and equip the next generation with the tools needed to build a better world.

A Story of Transformation: Hellen’s Journey

Hellen’s story is a powerful example of how creativity can change lives. Born and raised in a small village in Kenya, her daily routine was simple: fetching water from the river, going to school, and repeating the cycle. That was her world—until the day the MASK workshops came to her school.

Through art, Hellen discovered a new way of thinking, imagining, and aspiring. She began to see life not just as a matter of survival, but as an opportunity for creation. “I started connecting the dots,” she says. “I couldn’t believe myself.”

Her confidence grew alongside her creativity. While studying analytical chemistry in college, she designed a new drug during her final year. “I wanted to innovate everything!” she declared. And she did.

This combination of creativity and self-belief led Hellen to take on impressive roles early in her career. Within weeks of joining companies, she was promoted to senior positions. Today, she works at a leading global firm in Nairobi while raising a young family.

But Hellen knows that creativity is more than personal—it’s meant to be shared. She noticed many young people struggling with unemployment and decided to take action. Her advice? “Employ yourself. Start an online business. Create value, and the money will follow.” She founded a mentorship and coaching program to help young Kenyans take control of their futures.

“What motivates me is hearing from my mentees,” she says. “Watching their anxiety transform into positive action and belief—that’s everything.”

Hellen’s journey is just one of many stories that highlight the impact of creativity and innovation. The MASK Awards provide a unique opportunity for young people to share their talents and ideas with the world.
