Celebrating Black Excellence at the 57th NAACP Image Awards
The 57th annual NAACP Image Awards took place on Saturday, celebrating the achievements of Black artists across various fields including film, television, music, and literature. The event, hosted by Deon Cole, was a night filled with triumphs, heartfelt speeches, and moments that highlighted the importance of representation and storytelling.
Michael B. Jordan emerged as a standout winner, taking home the Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture award for his role in Sinners. This win added to the growing list of accolades for the horror film, which is also set to compete for top prizes at the upcoming Oscars. Jordan’s victory was a significant moment, especially considering the recent controversy surrounding the BAFTA Awards, where an incident involving the N-word sparked widespread debate. Despite this, Jordan chose not to address the issue directly during his acceptance speech.
Quinta Brunson, star of Abbott Elementary, made a powerful statement during her acceptance speech for Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series. She reflected on the challenges faced by Black individuals in the entertainment industry and expressed her joy in being part of a space that celebrates Black excellence. “Feels better this year than others,” she said. “I feel like we have watched some of our Black members of our family be under attack in this world, and it feels really good to come to this room and celebrate our Blackness.”
Angela Bassett continued to shine as she won the Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series award for her role in 9-1-1. Her performance was celebrated as a testament to her talent and dedication. Later in the evening, Sinners director Ryan Coogler and co-star Delroy Lindo took the stage to present the Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture award. Coogler praised the Image Awards for creating a space where Black stories are centered and celebrated without the need for explanation.
Cynthia Erivo was honored with the Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture award for her role in Wicked: For Good, although she was unable to attend the ceremony to accept her prize. The first award of the evening went to Miles Caton for Outstanding Breakthrough Performance in a Motion Picture, and he delivered an inspiring message to aspiring actors.
Ryan Coogler’s Sinners received the most nominations in the motion picture category, with 18 nods. The film also won awards for Outstanding Supporting Actor (Delroy Lindo) and Outstanding Supporting Actress (Wunmi Mosaku). Additionally, Sinners took home the Outstanding Ensemble Cast award, showcasing the strength of its cast and crew.
Deon Cole opened the ceremony with a bold statement, cursing out US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which was almost entirely censored on the broadcast. He also made a joke about Nicki Minaj, joking that something might be affecting her brain. Cole also referenced the N-word controversy at the BAFTA Awards, making a lighthearted comment about white men with Tourette’s syndrome.
The Outstanding Drama Series award went to Reasonable Doubt, while Sterling K. Brown won for Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series for Paradise. Bel-Air led the streaming/television category with seven nominations, including Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series for Jabari Banks and Outstanding Supporting Actor for Adrian Holmes.
Teyana Taylor was recognized for her work in both acting and music, receiving six nominations. Her album Escape Room was nominated for Outstanding Female Artist. Cynthia Erivo also received four nominations for her performance in Wicked: For Good, while Kendrick Lamar led the music categories with multiple nods.
Erivo, Taylor, Lamar, Doechii, and Jordan will compete for Entertainer of the Year. Colman Domingo will be honored with the President’s Award, and Viola Davis will receive the Chairman’s Award. The hip-hop group Salt-N-Pepa was also presented with the honorary Hall of Fame award.
New categories were introduced this year, including Outstanding Literary Work – Journalism and Outstanding Editing in a Motion Picture or Television Series. Other notable winners included Taraji P. Henson for Outstanding Actress in a Limited Television Series and Zootopia 2 for Outstanding Animated Motion Picture.
The NAACP Image Awards continue to be a celebration of Black creativity and excellence, affirming the power of storytelling to move culture forward. As Derrick Johnson, President and CEO of the NAACP, stated, “The NAACP Image Awards is our declaration to our community that ‘We See You,’ affirming Black creativity, excellence, and humanity across every space where our stories are told.”
