)— The voyage has been incredible for STM Head Basketball Coach Danny Broussard.

A little more than a year back, he lay recuperating from triple-bypass surgery in his bed, far removed from any basketball court.

Fast forward from that experience to March of 2025, when Broussard lead his overachieving Cougars to a Division 1 State Runner-Up performance in the State Playoffs. Then in April, it’s off to coach the nation’s best high school talent in the McDonald’s All-American game.

After applying to coach the prestigious national high school all-star team several times, with no response, he finally got his chance this year. It took a moment for reality to set in, though, especially since the letter came on April 1.

My initial reaction was, ‘Hold up, am I seeing an April Fool’s prank?’ ” Broussard stated. “This can’t be true. But then she says, ‘Coach, this isn’t an April Fool’s joke; you’ll actually be coaching at the Barclays Center on April 1st.’

Broussard mentioned that everything was top-notch, including the travel arrangements, accommodations, and the caliber of the players’ talents.

It was quite amusing; my starting lineup consisted of players who were 6-3, 6-7, 6-8, 6-8, and 6-9,” he stated. “Interestingly enough, the player standing at 6-9 could manage the ball as skillfully as the one at 6-3.

Given their considerable talents, Broussard and his team endeavored to create practice sessions and game strategies tailored to the abilities of these players.

He mentioned, ‘There are many shooting exercises,’” they explained. “We aim to incorporate a simple offensive strategy, not overly complex—just a few dribble moves, high ball screens, and then build our gameplay around those elements. Plus, we recognize that these players have the ability to find space and generate their own scoring opportunities. This approach has been quite effective for us.’

It certainly did. His West Squad emerged victorious with a score of 105-92. However, what mattered most to Broussard was his realization resulting from this process.

I think I’ve started to value what I have here a bit more,” he stated. “Maybe I got a little complacent and thought, ‘Wow, this isn’t a bad spot for me.’ The children I have around are quite wonderful.
