Oyo State Governor Announces Immediate Actions to Address Hospital and Infrastructure Challenges

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to serving the people of the state and ensuring the welfare of workers across various sectors. During a recent visit to Ogbomoso, the governor met with professional bodies at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Teaching Hospital to address ongoing industrial actions. The meeting was followed by a visit to the Soun of Ogbomoso, where the governor assured the monarch and the community of his administration’s plans to begin reconstructing inner roads in the town.

During the discussions, Governor Makinde outlined several immediate measures aimed at resolving the challenges faced by the hospital. One of the key decisions was the formation of a Governing Council for LAUTECH Teaching Hospital, which will be responsible for addressing long-term issues. Additionally, the governor approved a monthly stipend of ₦80,000 for 65 non-staff security personnel working at the hospital, with plans to integrate them into the hospital’s system as ad hoc staff.

The administration also announced an increase in the hospital’s monthly subvention by ₦35 million to help ease operational difficulties. Another significant step was the approval of accumulated promotion arrears totaling ₦219 million, which will be disbursed in three equal installments from October to December 2025. Furthermore, the government pledged to offset the arrears of the new minimum wage, covering the period from January to August 2025, in three tranches payable from October to December 2025.

Governor Makinde emphasized that some demands involving salary structure reviews would be addressed by the newly formed Governing Council once it is established. He also promised to tackle the concerns raised by nursing students. The governor highlighted the importance of balancing welfare and infrastructure development, stating that while the government must ensure the well-being of its citizens, it must also prioritize the development of liveable environments for current and future generations.

Long-Term Solutions and Infrastructure Development

In addition to the hospital-related measures, the governor announced plans to complete the LAUTECH Teaching Hospital Annex in Oyo before the end of his administration in 2027. This project is expected to significantly enhance healthcare delivery in the region. The governor also reiterated his commitment to infrastructure development, particularly in Ogbomoso, where he announced the reconstruction of inner roads.

A list of roads across the local government areas in Ogbomoso was read out during the event, with two contractors assigned to handle the reconstruction to ensure timely completion. The governor expressed confidence that these efforts would contribute to improving the quality of life for residents and creating a safer, more secure environment.

Support from Local Leaders and Community Response

The Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Afolabi Olaoye, praised the governor for his administrative style and acknowledged his efforts in addressing the hospital crisis and initiating road rehabilitation. The Soun also commended the governor for confirming him as the Soun of Ogbomoso and for his role in coronating other traditional leaders, including the Olubadan of Ibadan and the Alaafin of Oyo.

Representatives from professional bodies such as the Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU), Nurses and Midwives, and Nursing and Medical students expressed gratitude for the governor’s interventions. They appreciated his efforts in improving the hospital’s operations and called for continued support in enhancing welfare and infrastructure.
