The Top 10 College Football Coaches for the 2026 Season

The college football offseason is here, with coaching changes settled and teams preparing for spring practices. As the sport gears up for the next season, the question remains: who are the top coaches in the country? College football analyst Josh Pate tackled this issue on his show, offering a ranking of the top 10 coaches based on four key criteria: on-field results (with a focus on championships), talent acquisition through recruiting and the transfer portal, organizational strength and culture, and a forward-looking approach.

Here’s what he came up with:

1. Ryan Day, Ohio State

Ryan Day has been at the helm of Ohio State for over seven years, compiling an impressive 82-12 record and a 55-5 mark in the Big Ten. He led the Buckeyes to a national championship in the first year of the expanded 12-team College Football Playoff. Despite a four-game losing streak against Michigan, Day has consistently kept the team near the top of national rankings. His ability to maintain a high level of performance across all areas of the program makes him a standout coach.

2. Kirby Smart, Georgia

Kirby Smart has built a dynasty at Georgia, winning two national championships and maintaining a high standard of play over 10 full seasons. His record stands at 117-21 overall and 69-12 in conference games. Pate highlights Smart as having the best recruiters in the nation. While the team isn’t overly reliant on the transfer portal, it has developed a strong, consistent structure that allows for adaptability and success.

3. Curt Cignetti, Indiana

Curt Cignetti has made a name for himself at Indiana, where he has posted a 27-2 record in just two seasons, including a 17-1 mark in conference play. Pate notes that Cignetti could easily be ranked higher, given his impressive wins over top-tier coaches like Dan Lanning, Kalen DeBoer, Ryan Day, and Mario Cristobal. His rapid rise and consistent performance have made him one of the most exciting young coaches in the sport.

4. Dan Lanning, Oregon

Dan Lanning has only been a head coach for four years, but he has already established himself as one of the best in the game. His record stands at 48-8 overall and 32-4 in conference play. While he has faced some tough losses against elite teams, Lanning has dominated most of his competition. Pate believes it’s only a matter of time before he becomes a household name.

5. Marcus Freeman, Notre Dame

Marcus Freeman has taken over a program that was on the verge of the playoff last season. In just over four years, he has compiled a 43-12 record and reached a national championship game. Pate points out that Notre Dame is now the favorite to win the title in 2026. The program has seen significant improvements in both on-field performance and recruiting under Freeman’s leadership.

6. Lane Kiffin, LSU

Lane Kiffin is entering his fifth different college coaching job, this time at LSU. His previous stint at Ole Miss saw three straight 10+ win seasons, a feat that had never been accomplished before. Kiffin has shown a clear upward trajectory, excelling at managing the transfer portal and innovating when necessary. With increased resources at LSU, the potential for even greater success is high.

7. Kalen DeBoer, Alabama

Kalen DeBoer has a track record that speaks for itself, leading Washington to a national championship game. At Alabama, he has posted a 20-8 record in two years, with a 12-4 mark in SEC play. Pate notes that DeBoer has not let recruiting fall off from Nick Saban’s legacy. However, the challenge lies in predicting the future, as some believe Alabama may be trending downward. Fixing the run game will be crucial in reversing that narrative.

8. Steve Sarkisian, Texas

Steve Sarkisian is on his third different college program, and so far, his tenure at Texas has been the most successful. The Longhorns have reached the College Football Playoff semifinals multiple times, and Sarkisian has a 48-20 record overall, with a 30-13 mark in conference play. Pate believes Sarkisian is finally harnessing Texas’ full potential and predicts big things for the future. He also highlights Texas’ strong portal program as a key factor in its success.

9. Mario Cristobal, Miami

Mario Cristobal has brought a new level of intensity to Miami, leading the Hurricanes to 13 wins last season and a national championship game appearance. His record at Miami is 35-19, with a 18-14 mark in ACC play. Pate credits recency and a clear upward trajectory for Cristobal’s placement on the list. While some bad losses in a weak ACC raise questions, the program’s talent acquisition and organizational structure are strong indicators of future success.

10. Mike Elko, Texas A&M

Mike Elko took over at Texas A&M after a brief stint at Duke, where he won nine games. At Texas A&M, he nearly led the Aggies to an undefeated regular season last year. Pate believes the program is poised for more consistency going forward. He praises Elko’s recruiting strategy and notes that Texas A&M is one of the premier destinations in the transfer portal. The Aggies’ strategic approach to acquiring and developing talent makes them a rising force in the sport.
