Butler is off to a 4-0 start for a second straight season following Tuesday’s 68-51 home win over Olympic.
Butler’s two top returning players from a year ago – 6-foot-7 junior Isaiah White and 6-2 senior Terrance Badio – combined for 41 points as the Bulldogs started fast before breaking away from a 16-all tie in the second quarter to take the 17-point victory.
“I think our guys are doing a great job of being bought-in to what we’re trying to do,” sixth-year Butler head coach Patrick King said. “We’ve obviously got a lot of guys stepping into new roles.
“Isaiah is one who is in a totally different spot and we’re asking him to do a whole lot more this year. We want him creating offense and pressuring on the rim and he’s just done a great job.”
White scored the game’s first three baskets – the second on the first of his three slam dunks of the night – before finishing with a game-high 21 points. Badio, the leading returning scorer (14.4 points) from last year’s 15-13 team, added 20 points with 10 in each half. And sophomore newcomer Elijah Shine added 15 points.
King’s team returns to action Thursday at perennial power Weddington and has other challenging non-conference games as the Bulldogs will be readying themselves for the Meck Power Six 7A/8A Conference, which has four former state champions in its six-team membership, including two-time defending state champion North Mecklenburg.
“We know how hard our conference is going to be and we’ve got some tough non-conference games coming up,” said King, whose league slate begins on Jan. 6. “We’re at a starting point right now but we want to see consistent growth because we know we’re in the toughest conference in the state. If we can keep building on what we’ve done so far, we can make some noise in that conference.”
Olympic fell to 1-4 as it continues a challenging non-league slate as it prepares for its Greater Metro 6A/7A opener on Dec. 12.
First-year coach Ben Johnson’s team was led by junior Jaden Hardnett’s 18 points and junior Glance Ross’ 11 on Tuesday.
WEDNESDAY’S FEATURED GAME

The Titans have several returnees from that team, including 6-1 junior forward Khloe Joyner (18.7 ppg, 9.7 rpg).
