A Heartbreaking Account of Loss
In a deeply emotional interview, 65-year-old Mrs. Edith Alum shares the tragic story of her two sons, Chukwudi and Onyekachi Alum, who were killed in a violent incident that shook their community. The event took place on October 29, 2025, when the two men were shot dead while working on farmland in the Umuchigbo-Nike community, Enugu East Local Government Area of Enugu State.
Mrs. Alum recalls the events with tears in her eyes, emphasizing that her sons did not die in a communal clash but rather in an attack by angry youths. “They were shot dead by some angry youths,” she says. Chukwudi, 38, was her first child and a businessman, while Onyekachi, 31, was a student and the third child. Both had families of their own, making the loss even more devastating for the mother.
Understanding the Tragedy
The farmland where the attack occurred belongs to the community, and it is known that many people were working there at the time. However, the attackers specifically targeted Mrs. Alum’s sons, leaving her puzzled about why they were singled out. “I don’t know who I offended that made them single out my children,” she says.
Despite the tragedy, Mrs. Alum remains hopeful that justice will be served. She mentions that the community elders, including the chairman and chief of Nike, have expressed sympathy and promised to find the killers. “I am still hoping the murderers will be arrested and prosecuted,” she adds.
Community Response and Police Involvement
The police have reportedly taken some action, with the leader of the youth group involved in the murder being arrested. However, Mrs. Alum cannot confirm the details as she has been focused on receiving condolences from others. She also reveals that she has six children, but now only four remain after the loss of her two sons.
The situation has led to ongoing concerns about the safety of the community. A relative of the victims states that the killers are still on the run, adding to the sense of uncertainty and fear.
The Role of the Chairman
The chairmanship position in the community holds significant power, overseeing the management of the community, handling transactions, and representing the community in negotiations. The conflict over this position appears to have escalated into violence, as one candidate, who lost the election, sought to gain control through other means.
According to Chinedu Emmanuel, a close ally of the chairman, the suspected killers had yet to be arrested. He explains that the opponent of the current chairman wanted to become the head of the community by appointment, believing he could secure the position through influential contacts. When the community voted otherwise, he became aggrieved, leading to the violent confrontation.
The Attackers and Their Motives
The attackers were described as a group of around 100 individuals, including cultists from various areas such as Emene, Coal Camp, Obiagu, and Ogbohe in Abakpa. They arrived in a convoy of three buses, private cars, and motorcycles, catching the community off guard. Despite the large number of people present, the attackers specifically targeted Mrs. Alum’s sons, highlighting the deliberate nature of the attack.
An uncle of the deceased, Tony Ugwu, provides further insight into the incident. He explains that the conflict between the factions was rooted in the community election, with the opposing faction supporting a candidate who lost the vote. His nephews, Chukwudi and Onyekachi, were caught in the middle of this struggle.
Aftermath and Ongoing Concerns
The aftermath of the attack was marked by violence and arson, with some individuals seeking revenge for the deaths of the brothers. However, the chairman’s calm response helped prevent further retaliation. “Without his intervention, there could have been brutal reprisal attacks,” Mr. Ugwu notes.
Despite the efforts to restore peace, the perpetrators remain at large, and no arrests have been confirmed. Mr. Ugwu adds that nothing like this has happened in the community before, describing the incident as extreme wickedness.
Looking Ahead
As the community grapples with the aftermath of this tragedy, the hope for justice and healing remains strong. The loss of Chukwudi and Onyekachi has left a deep scar, but the resilience of the community and the determination of those affected continue to drive the search for truth and accountability.
