The Tragic Story of Ochanya Ogbanje

Ochanya Ogbanje, a 13-year-old girl from Benue State, died on 17 October 2018 due to complications arising from years of alleged sexual abuse. Her death sparked widespread outrage and calls for justice across Nigeria. Seven years later, the case is once again in the spotlight, with renewed demands for accountability and action.

Ochanya was a Junior Secondary School student at the Federal Government Girls College in Gboko, Benue State. She had been living with the Ogbuja family in Ugbokolo, seeking better educational opportunities. However, this move led to a tragic series of events that ultimately cost her life.

Victor Ogbuja, the son of Andrew Ogbuja, a lecturer at the Benue State Polytechnic, has been accused of serially raping Ochanya. Alongside his father, he is believed to have subjected her to prolonged sexual abuse until she fell ill and eventually died. Despite being declared wanted by the police in 2018, Victor has remained at large and has not faced trial.

Legal Proceedings and Acquittals

In 2022, the Benue State High Court in Makurdi acquitted Mr. Andrew Ogbuja of rape and causing the death of Ochanya. However, the same day, the Federal High Court in Makurdi convicted his wife, Felicia Ochiga-Ogbuja, who was the direct guardian of Ochanya, for negligence in protecting the child from abuse. Ms. Ochiga-Ogbuja was sentenced to five months in prison without the option of a fine.

The Federal High Court’s ruling highlighted the failure of the guardian to act against the abuse. The Court of Appeal later affirmed this conviction, describing her conduct as “heinous” and “devoid of sympathy.” The judges emphasized that Felicia had a legal duty to protect Ochanya and failed to do so despite being alerted by her own daughter, Winifred Ogbuja.

Social Media Outrage and Calls for Justice

Seven years after Ochanya’s death, social media platforms like X, Facebook, and TikTok have become arenas for renewed outrage. Users are demanding that authorities reopen the case and apprehend Victor Ogbuja. The discussion has also focused on Winifred Ogbuja, the daughter of Andrew Ogbuja, who deactivated her account following intense backlash.

Although Winifred has not been accused of any crime, some online users circulated screenshots and photos allegedly showing her with her brother (not Victor), suggesting she may have benefited from or shielded the accused. This has led to calls for her questioning, though no evidence supports these claims.

Nigerian social media personality Tunde Ednut also joined the conversation, sharing an Instagram post with over 8.7 million followers. He expressed sadness over the case and called for stronger protection for children in Nigeria. His post received over 34,000 likes and more than 4,000 comments.

A petition titled “Justice for Ochanya” on Change.org is also gaining traction, calling for authorities to reopen the case and bring the missing suspects to book. Child rights activist Betty Abah has also urged authorities to take action, emphasizing the need to strengthen child protection and combat sexual abuse across Nigeria.

The Quest for Better Life Gone Wrong

Ochanya left her rural home in Ogene-Amejo to live with the Ogbujas in Ugbokolo, hoping for better educational opportunities. However, this decision led to a five-year period of repeated sexual abuse by Mr. Ogbuja and his son Victor. She was admitted to the Federal Medical Centre in Makurdi for two months before succumbing to complications from Vesico-Vaginal Fistula (VVF), a condition attributed to prolonged sexual abuse.

Despite the court rulings, the case remains unresolved, with Victor Ogbuja still at large. Reports suggest he is currently in Lagos pursuing a music career, although this has not been independently verified.

Conclusion

Ochanya Ogbanje’s story highlights the urgent need for justice and stronger child protection mechanisms in Nigeria. While legal proceedings have taken place, the absence of Victor Ogbuja and the ongoing calls for justice underscore the importance of holding perpetrators accountable. As the nation continues to grapple with issues of sexual abuse and child safety, the case of Ochanya serves as a reminder of the devastating consequences of such crimes and the need for systemic change.
