A Memoir of a Remarkable Friend
David Mulindwa Butare, a man known for his kindness, warmth, and deep love for others, left an indelible mark on the lives of those who knew him. His passing was a loss not only to his family but also to the community that cherished his spirit. The story of how he impacted one individual’s journey into performance poetry is a testament to his character and the profound effect he had on others.
A Night That Changed Everything
It was a cold Thursday night in 2014, and I found myself at Gatto Matto, a bar and restaurant in the Kampa suburb of Bugolobi. I had been writing poetry for years, sharing it on social media, where I was known as a promising poet. However, this night was different. I was set to perform at the Kwivuga Poetry Session, an event that brought together poets and enthusiasts from all walks of life. The venue was packed with over 1,000 people, and the atmosphere was electric.
As I stood by the bar, my heart raced with fear. This was my first time performing poetry in front of a live audience, and the pressure was immense. I clutched my poem tightly, unsure of what to say or how to deliver it. My nerves were frayed, and I felt completely out of place.
The Support of a True Friend
That’s when David Mulindwa Butare approached me. He was Nunu’s younger brother and someone who had a way of making everyone feel at ease. “Matogo, what’s up?” he asked, his voice calm and reassuring. I admitted my fear, and he offered to help. “Let’s take a shot of tequila. It will calm your nerves. My treat,” he said. I accepted, hoping it would ease my anxiety.
The tequila did little to calm my nerves, but David’s presence was a comfort. He encouraged me to take another shot, and despite my apprehension, I did. As we continued, I felt a mix of fear and hope. When the MC announced my name, David escorted me to the stage, where I delivered my poem. It wasn’t perfect, but it was a start.
The Impact of a Kind Word
After the performance, the MC humorously remarked that my reading resembled a frightened man reading the news on a slow day. I was crestfallen, but David reassured me that first-time performers often struggled. His belief in me was infectious, and it gave me the confidence to try again. From that night on, I began to explore performance poetry more seriously, and it transformed my approach to writing.
David’s influence extended beyond just encouraging me. He had a unique ability to uplift others, even in their darkest moments. He understood the power of friendship and used it to bring joy and laughter to those around him. His dreams of becoming a stand-up comedian were evident, but he often chose to support others rather than seek the spotlight himself.
A Life Filled with Purpose
David’s life was marked by his dedication to his family and friends. He was a devoted brother, father, and uncle, and his love for children was evident in everything he did. He was born on May 10, 1983, to Tito Butare and Rosette Kyampaire Butare. His journey took him through various educational institutions, including Kampala Kindergarten, Nakasero Primary School, Kabojja High School, Green Hill Academy, Namasagali College, and the University of Pretoria in South Africa.
In addition to his academic pursuits, David worked as a business developer at DHL International Ltd., where he made a lasting impact. He passed away on November 3 and was laid to rest in Kasangula-Namungo, Mityana District, on November 6. His legacy lives on in the hearts of those who knew him.
A Lasting Legacy
David Mulindwa Butare was more than just a friend; he was a beacon of hope and kindness. His ability to connect with others and uplift their spirits was unparalleled. He believed in the power of friendship and always sought to make a difference in the lives of those around him.
His story serves as a reminder of the importance of compassion and the impact one person can have on others. As the writer Ernest Hemingway once said, “Happiness in intelligent people is the rarest thing I know.” For David, this sentiment captured the essence of his life—a rare blend of intelligence, kindness, and unwavering support for those he loved.
