The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has been at the center of a significant internal conflict, particularly following the expulsion of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and others. Ini Ememobong, the factional National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, shared insights into these developments during an interview with OLUFEMI ADEDIRAN.
Why Was Nyesom Wike Expelled?
The PDP has a structured process for handling internal disputes, which often requires a cooling period to allow emotions to subside. After the 2023 elections, the party believed that such a period was necessary. However, by 2025, it became evident that this cooling period had been misused, with some individuals doubling down on their actions. This prompted the party to make a decisive move, emphasizing that timely decisions are crucial when addressing negative behaviors.
Court Orders and the PDP Convention
Despite two federal high court orders to halt the PDP national convention, the party proceeded. Ememobong explained that there are multiple court judgments, and the PDP had the right to choose which one to follow. The party opted to respect the last judgment it received, highlighting concerns about the politicization of the judiciary. He argued that political matters should not be subject to court rulings, as they require negotiation and agreement rather than litigation.
INEC’s Absence at the Convention
The absence of officials from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) at the convention raised questions. According to the Electoral Act, INEC may attend without prior notice. While the party did not receive any official notification, Ememobong stated that it was their prerogative to decide whether to attend. He emphasized that the party fulfilled its duty by giving notice, leaving the decision up to INEC.
The Violence at the PDP National Secretariat
The Tuesday violence at the PDP national secretariat was attributed to conflicting meetings. Ememobong described how the expelled former secretary claimed to have invited the police to manage intruders. Upon arrival, participants were teargassed, resulting in injuries. He noted that the situation was eventually under control, with the police requesting everyone to leave, except for the FCT minister who refused to comply.
The Wike Camp’s Claims of Illegality
Ememobong dismissed the Wike camp’s claims of illegality, stating that democracy involves the majority having their way while the minority expresses their views. He criticized the Wike camp for suggesting that the majority should only have their say, arguing that the majority’s decision is valid.
The Expulsion of Governor Seyi Makinde
The expulsion of Governor Seyi Makinde and others by the Wike camp was met with skepticism. Ememobong pointed out that the NEC is not empowered to undertake discipline according to the party’s constitution. He likened the situation to a child’s logic, where the person being disciplined attempts to retaliate.
Restoring Unity Within the Party
Restoring unity within the PDP requires a shared goal. Ememobong highlighted the contradiction between Wike’s support for President Bola Tinubu and the party’s constitution, which mandates candidates in all offices. He compared it to a marital dispute where both parties have differing expectations.
Strengthening the Party Ahead of the 2027 Elections
To prepare for the 2027 elections, the PDP must address internal issues and remove undesirable elements. Ememobong emphasized the need for reconciliation, transparency, and equity, ensuring that internal democracy guides all party activities.
Preventing Further Defections
Defection, according to Ememobong, reflects the state of mind of individuals. He criticized the celebration of defectors, comparing it to celebrating a thief. To prevent defections, he advocated for a clear ideological foundation for the party, ensuring members understand the differences between political parties.
Collaborating with Other Parties
Ememobong confirmed that the PDP plans to collaborate with other political parties to unseat President Tinubu in 2027. He emphasized the importance of discussions and negotiations in achieving this goal.
