A British Woman Convicted of Blackmail and Perjury
A British woman has been found guilty of blackmailing a fellow countryman for GBP100,000 (US$134,030) after falsely accusing him of rape and threatening to report him to Hong Kong police. The case, which took place in the District Court in Wan Chai, involved Isabel Anonia Barbra Eudora Rose, a 25-year-old event management professional from London.
Rose initially presented herself as a victim of sexual assault but later faced trial for fabricating the claim and using it to extort money from a man she met during a trip to Thailand. The alleged incident occurred on the night of January 31, 2024, when Rose claimed that the man, a banker whose identity was not disclosed in court, had raped her.
In her verdict, Judge Adriana Noelle Tse Ching dismissed Rose’s allegations, describing her as “thoroughly dishonest, incredible and unreliable.” The judge based her decision on evidence from messages exchanged between the two individuals and their testimonies regarding their meeting in Thailand in December 2023, which led up to Rose’s visit to Hong Kong the following month.
During the trial, it was revealed that Rose had stayed at the man’s one-bedroom flat in Central while in Hong Kong. She claimed that the rape happened on the first night of her arrival. However, messages between them suggested a different narrative. After the alleged non-consensual encounter, Rose told the man that he had “violated” her that night as she “didn’t want to have sex.”
The man responded by apologizing, stating that he was slightly drunk and had misread her signals. He explained that he was referring to an attempt at oral sex, which Rose refused. He said this was why he later apologized for “rushing her.” In response, Rose asked if he was annoyed that she did not want to have sex, and he replied that he was impressed by her restraint but felt mildly frustrated.
The judge concluded that while the pair had engaged in intimate acts, they had not proceeded to penetrative intercourse. This marked a significant shift from Rose’s earlier claims, as she had previously apologized for not wanting to be intimate with the man. The judge noted that if intercourse had taken place, Rose would not have made such an apology.

Rose then sent a message stating, “You’ve given 10 per cent of what I’m owed, 100 per cent of my soul gone,” implying that the man should have given her more. She gave him 24 hours to pay GBP100,000, threatening to report the alleged rape to police if he refused.
Before concluding her 315-page judgment, Judge Tse condemned Rose’s actions, highlighting that “an allegation of sexual assault is easy to make but difficult to disprove.” She found that Rose had made “unwarranted demands” for money she was not entitled to and issued threats that were “clearly detrimental or unpleasant for” the man, leading to her conviction for blackmail.
After hearing the verdict, Rose broke down in tears in the dock and said, “How is this possible? Really, what is happening?” She will be sentenced on July 22.
