Rising Political Figure and the Growing Influence of Edwin Sifuna

Edwin Sifuna, a Nairobi senator, has emerged as a significant political figure in Kenya, gaining considerable attention from both the public and the government. His growing influence is evident through his recent activities and the increasing support he has received.

On Thursday, President William Ruto made a direct response to Sifuna for the first time, dismissing his comments on the Affordable Housing Programme. This move came just a day after a Trends and Insights For Africa (Tifa) poll indicated that Sifuna was now the strongest opposition candidate, with 15 percent support, nine percentage points behind the President.

Sifuna’s remarks about the government’s housing program were lighthearted but pointed. During an interview with Luhya FM stations, he joked about the feasibility of having chickens on the 12th floor of a new housing unit. “We Luhyas can’t live in a place where our chickens can’t. Tell me, boss, how will your chicken get to the 12th floor?” he said.

Ruto responded with a strong rebuttal, questioning the logic of those who suggested Kenyans should remain in slums simply because a chicken couldn’t reach higher floors. “Do these people really have any sense?” he asked.

This exchange highlights the shifting dynamics in Kenyan politics. Previously, Ruto had focused his criticism on figures like Rigathi Gachagua, Kalonzo Musyoka, and Fred Matiang’i. However, this is the first time the President has publicly addressed Sifuna, indicating a recognition of his growing political clout.

The Rise of Sifuna

Analysts suggest that Sifuna’s rise is not only due to his policy positions but also his ability to mobilize support across different regions. His involvement with the Linda Mwananchi movement has further amplified his visibility. The movement, which advocates for opposition unity ahead of the 2027 elections, has organized rallies in various parts of the country.

Recent opinion polls show that Sifuna has recorded the fastest rise among opposition figures, increasing from virtually no support in 2025 to 15 percent in June 2026. This growth places him among the leading opposition contenders.

The Tifa research also noted that while opposition support remains fragmented, Sifuna’s ascent is notable. He currently holds second place with 15 percent approval, followed by Kalonzo Musyoka at 13 percent and Fred Matiang’i at 14 percent.

Political Momentum and Financial Support

Sifuna has been capitalizing on the momentum generated by the Linda Mwananchi movement. The movement recently held rallies in Trans Nzoia and Bungoma counties, aiming to showcase its strength and test its ability to convert enthusiasm into political power.

Organizers have confirmed the attendance of influential leaders, former legislators, and professionals from the region, signaling the movement’s expanding appeal. Vihiga Senator Godffrey Osotsi mentioned that invitations were extended to all opposition principals, some of whom plan to send representatives.

Beyond political symbolism, Sifuna’s allies are working to build a financial war chest to sustain the movement’s nationwide activities. Veteran politician Fred Gumo revealed that lawyers from Western Kenya have begun mobilizing resources to support Sifuna’s presidential bid. Community leaders are also organizing fundraising drives to ensure adequate resources for his campaign.

Gumo emphasized that Sifuna only needs fuel and transport logistics, as his supporters are eager to reach him wherever they are. He drew a comparison to former U.S. President Barack Obama, who ran without a substantial financial war chest.

Emerging Alliances and Future Prospects

Amos Wako, a former Busia senator and Attorney General, has also expressed support for Sifuna. Wako, one of the ODM party trustees, stated that he is backing Sifuna despite being away in Geneva.

Bumula MP Jack Wamboka, involved in organizing the rallies, highlighted the growing enthusiasm and commitment from the people. He believes that when leaders unite around the aspirations of the citizens, a stronger, more inclusive future becomes possible.

As part of the preparations, Sifuna was scheduled to address all region stations broadcasting in Luhya dialect, pitching his agenda to a region with a combined five million votes.

President Ruto appears to be taking note of Sifuna as a potential challenger in the 2027 polls, signaling a shift in political dynamics that could reshape the landscape of Kenyan politics.
