BIU to graduate 1324 students with 144 bagging first class honours

Benson Idahosa University, BIU, will on Saturday, September 12, be graduating a total of 1324 students made up of 1059 undergraduates and 265 postgraduates.

Of this number, 144 made the first class, 490 second class upper, 377 second class lower and 48 third class degrees.

Prof. John Aroye Okhuoya, Vice Chancellor and Chairman of the Senate of the University announced this on Tuesday at a press conference ahead of the 22nd convocation of the institution.

The Vice Chancellor who celebrated the academic milestones of the institution strongly criticized the Federal Government for its continued exclusion of private tertiary institutions from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund).

According to Okhuoya, the 22nd Convocation is a significant milestone in the history of our University. It is not only an occasion to celebrate the accomplishments of our graduating students, but also an opportunity to reflect on the progress we have made as an institution and to share with the public some of the significant developments and achievements recorded by Benson Idahosa University in the period leading to this year’s convocation.

“I am therefore pleased to announce that this year’s graduation cuts across nine faculties namely; Faculty of Agriculture and Agricultural Science, Allied Health Sciences, Arts and Education, Basic Medical Sciences, Computing, Engineering, Law, Science and the Faculty of Social and Management Sciences as well as the School of Postgraduate Studies.

“The school has recorded a number of significant achievements across academics, professional education, intellectual engagement, student development and sports.

“This year, we will be graduating our first set of B.Sc. Human Anatomy and B.Sc. Human Physiology students and it is worthy of note that our best graduating student is from the Department of Human Anatomy, who graduated with a CGPA of 4.99”.

The VC said he was also pleased to announce that this month of September, the University will be having its 3rd induction ceremonies for Nursing Science and Medical Laboratory Science students.

He also disclosed that on Monday, 7th of September, 53 students were inducted by the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria, adding that these students recorded 100% passes in their professional examinations with 13 distinctions.

“While we celebrate this, we look forward to also celebrating the one hundred and twenty one (121) Nursing students, who will be inducted into the Nursing profession on the 23rd of September, 2026.

Our Engineering students are also not left out. Today ninety- six (96) Engineering students will be inducted into the Nigerian Society of Engineers at our Legacy campus, the 2nd edition in the university. We give all glory to God” he said.

On what the future holds for Benson Idahosa University, the VC recalled that a couple of months ago, the University held a press conference announcing the accreditation of some of our programmes.

“One of the most significant achievements has been the first clinical accreditation of our Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN).

“Due to our excellent performance, the council gave us a go ahead to conduct the Part III exams as well as the Part II Professional Examination in Medicine and Surgery which was what we were initially due for.

“This, places our medical programme on an even stronger professional footing. The MDCN also approved an increase in our annual admission quota for Medicine from 50 to 100 students and this has taken effect with this new academic session.

“In practical terms, this means that Benson Idahosa University has doubled its capacity to train future medical professionals. For us, this is not merely an increase in numbers. It is an opportunity to contribute more significantly to the development of Nigeria’s healthcare workforce.

“While we give God all the glory for this remarkable achievement, our commitment to quality education has also been demonstrated through the full accreditation of four of our academic programmes, namely: (B. Agric) Agriculture, B.Sc. Biochemistry, B. Sc. Microbiology, and B.Sc. Banking and Finance.

“The University also successfully underwent resource verification for three new programmes: Bachelor of Science in Cyber Security, Software Engineering and Doctor of Philosophy; (Ph.D.) Law of which we were granted licence by the NUC to start these programmes.

“This is the kind of forward-looking education that Benson Idahosa University is committed to providing. I am pleased to announce that admission is on-going into these newly accredited programmes for the 2026/2027 academic session”, he declared.

“While we celebrate our graduating students, it is also important to highlight the developments and ways in which the university produce some of the best entrepreneurs, politicians, men of God and professionals.

“One of which is the recent conference that was organised by the Faculty of Arts and Education themed, “The Repositioned Educator: Mindset, Mastery and Money.” The conference provided a platform for scholars, educators, facilitators, members of the University community and other stakeholders to examine the changing realities of education and the evolving role of the educator.

“In my opening remarks at the conference, it noted that education is changing, the classroom is changing, the learner is changing, and technology is changing the way knowledge is created, accessed and transmitted. Consequently, the educator cannot afford to remain the same.

This is the kind of intellectual engagement that Benson Idahosa University intends to continue promoting as we seek to anticipate change, shape change and lead change.

While the BIU Vice Chancellor is enthused with joy over the unabated successes being recorded by the University, Prof Okhuoya lamented

the denial of private Universities access to the TETFUND.

He therefore called on the Federal Government to review the law establishing TETFUND, which he said, denied private universities access to the funds, noting that, “every year, we graduate over a thousand students and send them into the labour market an indication that we contribute more to fund”.
