When the installation was taking place, Archbishop Casey knocked at the door to enter, after which he read out the installation letter from Pope Francis. During his sermon, Casey conveyed his feelings of thankfulness and humbleness.

For 31 years, I have felt humble and thankful for the privilege of my priesthood and the kindness of Christ, which allows me to serve, becoming essential to me like the air I breathe. Now, I am filled with humility and gratitude anew as I respond to Pope Francis’s call to lead this worldwide church as the shepherd of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati,” stated Casey.

The Catholic Diocese of Cincinnati covers approximately 450,000 followers spread over 19 counties in southwestern Ohio and includes more than 200 parishes. The diocese is presently engaged in its “Beacons of Light” transformation initiative, aimed at forming 60 new parish communities via consolidations and various modifications.

Casey similarly recognized the efforts of the departing Archbishop Dennis Schnurr, who is stepping down following 16 years of service.

The letter from the Pope also contained multiple expressions of gratitude toward the departing Archbishop Dennis Schnurr, who is stepping down following 16 years of service. Two years ago, as mandated upon reaching the age of 75, he tendered his resignation, which was further complicated by his ongoing battle with cancer. The Pope accepted this resignation just two months prior.
