Gun Violence Foundation’s ‘Rise Up’ Event Lights Up Cincinnati

Posted on

CINCINNATI (WXIX) – Advocates against gun violence in Cincinnati convened on Wednesday to share their experiences with the hope of fostering change.

The Rise event was organized by the WhitneyStrong foundation, cofounded by Whitney Austin. In 2018, she endured being hit by 12 bullets during a mass shooting at the Fifth Third Bank headquarters in Cincinnati.

She expresses her wish that individuals can recognize themselves within the tales told.

“During tough times, it requires significant bravery and fortitude to stand up for what matters most, and often this journey begins with inspiration; that’s precisely what these tales provide,” Austin stated.

One of the speakers at the event was Isaac Davis. In November 2023, his 11-year-old son, Domonic, was playing in a park in the West End when gunshots were heard, resulting in the boy’s death and injuries to five other children.

“I do everything for Domonic; this is all for Domonic, this is all for him,” Davis stated.

He expresses that he believes recounting his experience might motivate others to create an impact.

“I’m always ready to speak whenever anyone asks me to,” Davis stated. “Although I struggle with being around cameras and facing crowds, this is something I must do for my son until we achieve justice and ensure he’s remembered forever, without ever being forgotten.”

Davis mentions that the loss of Domonic caused his family to establish the Forever 11 Foundation aimed at reducing gun violence in Cincinnati. They also initiated a toy drive in his memory.

He states that the community can contribute by uniting.

Davis stated, ‘Attend the events whenever they occur and, as I mentioned earlier, somebody should address this issue. We must unite as a neighborhood and support one another.’

Over a year since Domonic’s killing, his family maintains they have not received justice and continue seeking explanations.

From the very beginning, I had an idea of who the suspect might be, but nobody seems eager to speak up. We require the support of the community; people should bravely come forth with information,” stated Davis. “Consider this: it could involve someone’s child. Take action now, lest you become the next victim.

The annual WhitneyStrong Story Rise event in Cincinnati aims to highlight the effects of gun violence and foster empathy and action.
