Protests Erupt in West Bengal Over Alleged Atrocities Against Women

A significant protest is set to take place in Fulbari, Jalpaiguri, as the youth wing of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJYM) organizes a rally titled “Uttar Kanya (Mini-Secretariat) Cholo.” This event is aimed at drawing attention to the alleged mistreatment and violence against women in the state. The protest comes amid growing concerns over the safety of women in various institutions, including educational and healthcare facilities.

Indranil Khan, the State President of BJYM, emphasized the importance of the rally during an interview. He stated that the initiative is dedicated to the dignity of women in West Bengal. Khan highlighted several incidents, such as those in Sandeshkhali, RG Kar Medical College, and Law College, where women have reportedly faced repeated humiliation and disrespect. The protest aims to bring these issues to the forefront and demand accountability from the ruling party.

Before the event, Khan, along with other party leaders, visited the site to ensure all preparations are in order. The rally will be led by the Leader of the Opposition, Suvendu Adhikari, along with several MPs and MLAs. Following the march, the leaders are expected to address the public, further amplifying the message of the protest.

PM Modi Condemns Atrocities and Criticizes TMC Government

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed deep concern over the recent incidents of violence against women in West Bengal. He specifically mentioned the rape-murder case at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where a trainee doctor was found dead in the hospital’s seminar room on August 9, 2024. Modi criticized the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government for allegedly shielding the culprits involved in this heinous crime.

Modi addressed a public gathering in Durgapur, where he condemned the TMC government for failing to protect women in the state. He pointed out that the party, which claims to uphold values such as “Maa, Mati, and Manush,” is responsible for the ongoing injustice. The Prime Minister also referenced the legacy of Kadambini Ganguly, India’s first female western-trained medical doctor, emphasizing the irony of the current situation.

Accusations of TMC Involvement in Recent Cases

In addition to the RG Kar incident, Modi cited the alleged rape case at South Calcutta Law College in Kasba, where a student was reportedly gang-raped on June 25. He claimed that the accused in this case has ties to the TMC. The Prime Minister accused the party of making every effort to protect the perpetrators, stating that the TMC government shielded the criminals in the RG Kar case.

Modi noted that the nation is still reeling from the aftermath of the RG Kar incident, yet another atrocity occurred in a different college. He argued that these incidents demonstrate the TMC’s ruthless approach and called for action to free Bengal from such practices.

Impact on Education System

The Prime Minister also took aim at the TMC government’s handling of the education system. He accused the party of conducting a “double attack” on the state’s education sector through corruption and crime. This has led to thousands of teachers being unemployed due to the government’s mismanagement. Modi highlighted that the court has recognized this as a systematic fraud, putting both the present and future of the state at risk.

He stressed that the situation regarding youth education and skill development is alarming, whether it pertains to higher or primary education. The Prime Minister urged for urgent measures to address these challenges and restore faith in the education system.

Calls for Change

The ongoing protests and statements from prominent figures like PM Modi reflect a growing demand for change in West Bengal. As the situation continues to unfold, the focus remains on ensuring the safety and rights of women and addressing the systemic issues within the state’s governance. The call for accountability and justice resonates strongly among the people, signaling a potential shift in the political landscape.
