Elon Musk’s Shift in Political Strategy
Elon Musk has made a significant move in the political arena, offering a gesture of goodwill to Donald Trump following their recent split. This gesture includes a $15 million donation to Trump and various Republican causes. The donations were made after a period of tension between Musk and Trump, particularly after Musk left his position as chairman of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), but before he announced plans to launch an independent political party called the “America Party.”
Musk’s financial support was directed towards several super PACs that back both the president and his party. According to Federal Election Commission filings, he contributed $5 million to MAGA Inc., the Senate Leadership Fund, and the Congressional Leadership Fund on June 27. Just eight days later, Musk officially launched the “America Party,” which he described as a movement aimed at “giving you back your freedom.”
In 2025, Musk has also donated $45 million to his own America PAC, primarily used for an unsuccessful Wisconsin Supreme Court election. The Daily Mail has sought comments from the White House regarding these developments.
Launching the America Party
Musk announced the formation of the America Party on his social media platform, X, shortly after Independence Day. This came after he conducted an online poll on July 4 asking his followers whether they supported establishing a new political party. The results showed strong support, with 65.4% in favor, prompting Musk to make the official announcement.
“By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it!” Musk wrote. He criticized the current political system, stating, “When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy. Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.”
A Turbulent Relationship
Musk had previously held a prestigious role within the White House, acting as a special advisor to the president and overseeing the Department of Government Efficiency. However, a rift emerged between the two former allies, leading to public disputes played out over social media.
Many had anticipated that the relationship between Trump and Musk would not last long, with betting markets even predicting when they would turn against each other. These markets heavily favored a fallout before July 1, 2025, less than six months after Musk joined Trump’s administration as a special advisor.
Musk’s shift from being a major supporter to a critic was evident as he went from spending $288 million for Trump’s election campaign to making public insults about him, including suggesting Trump was involved in the Epstein files.
Escalating Tensions
The break occurred after Musk stepped down from DOGE over Trump’s ‘Big Beautiful Bill,’ which ended tax breaks for electric vehicles—a key focus for Musk as the CEO of Tesla. Musk argued that the bill undermined DOGE’s cost-cutting efforts by increasing the deficit.
The tension escalated further when Trump rescinded his nomination offer to Musk’s ally, Jared Isaacman, for NASA administrator due to donations Isaacman made to the Democrats. Since then, Trump and Musk have engaged in public mudslinging, with Musk accusing the president of ingratitude and claiming he would have lost the election without him. In response, Trump labeled Musk as “crazy.”
New Political Ambitions
Since their public split, Musk has threatened to start a new, third political party and support the reelection campaign of Republican Rep. Thomas Massie, who was one of the few who voted against Trump’s big bill.
Recent reports suggest that Trump may have been the source of information about Musk’s alleged drug use. According to author Michael Wolff, who wrote the book Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House, Trump revealed details about Musk’s drug use. The New York Times reported that during the 2024 presidential campaign, Musk used large amounts of ketamine, leading to bladder problems, along with Ecstasy, psychedelic mushrooms, and what appeared to be Adderall.
Musk has denied these claims and released a drug test online to counter the allegations.
