Strengthening Ties: Nepal and China Celebrate 70 Years of Diplomatic Relations

Nepal and China recently marked a significant milestone in their bilateral relationship, celebrating the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two nations. Leaders from both countries exchanged congratulatory messages, highlighting the enduring friendship, mutual respect, and cooperation that have characterized their relationship over the decades.

Presidential Messages Highlight Shared Values

President Ramchandra Paudel of Nepal extended heartfelt congratulations to Chinese President Xi Jinping, expressing best wishes to the government and people of China. In his message, Paudel emphasized the “time-tested friendship grounded in mutual trust, sovereign equality, and peaceful coexistence.” He reaffirmed Nepal’s commitment to working closely with China to realize a shared vision of “peace, progress, and prosperity.”

In response, President Xi Jinping acknowledged the deep cultural and historical connections between Nepal and China. He praised the “healthy and steady development” of bilateral relations, particularly under the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative and the China-Nepal Strategic Partnership of Cooperation Featuring Everlasting Friendship for Development and Prosperity. Xi reiterated China’s readiness to deepen cooperation across various sectors and enhance regional peace and development.

Prime Minister Oli Calls for Enhanced Collaboration

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli also expressed his support for greater cooperation between Nepal and China. In his message to President Xi and Premier Li Qiang, Oli highlighted the significance of continued collaboration in areas such as cross-border connectivity, infrastructure, trade, transit, disaster preparedness, agriculture, health, and green energy. He recalled the historic 2019 state visit of President Xi to Nepal and underscored the importance of maintaining strong ties.

Oli reiterated Nepal’s commitment to the ‘One China Principle’ and expressed admiration for China’s “transformative achievements” under President Xi’s leadership. He noted that these achievements have inspired Nepal’s aspirations for a “Prosperous Nepal, happy Nepali.”

In his message to Premier Li, Oli emphasized the need for enhancing mutually beneficial cooperation rooted in the “five principles of peaceful coexistence,” mutual trust, and respect. He committed to implementing past bilateral agreements to generate real benefits for the people of both countries.

Premier Li Qiang Commits to Continued Partnership

Premier Li Qiang responded by acknowledging the sound and steady growth of China-Nepal relations since the establishment of diplomatic ties. He stated that China is ready to work with Nepal to accelerate high-quality Belt and Road cooperation and other forms of assistance in various fields. This effort aims to advance the progress of the China-Nepal Strategic Partnership of Cooperation Featuring Everlasting Friendship for Development and Prosperity.

Foreign Ministers Emphasize Mutual Support

Foreign Minister Arzu Rana Deuba of Nepal, in her message to Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, highlighted the ecological, cultural, social, political, and developmental ties between the two countries. She appreciated China’s support for Nepal’s development endeavors and expressed willingness to strengthen cooperation in areas such as building resilience against transboundary climate threats.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang echoed these sentiments, praising the traditional friendship between the two nations and highlighting their ongoing cooperation based on equality and mutual benefit. He reaffirmed China’s commitment to working with Nepal to implement prior bilateral agreements and deepen the strategic partnership.

A Legacy of Strong and Amicable Relations

Since the official establishment of diplomatic relations in 1955, Nepal and China have maintained a strong and amicable relationship. This has been marked by consistent high-level exchanges, cultural connectivity, and regional cooperation.
