Addressing Allegations of Religious Genocide and Highlighting National Unity
President Bola Tinubu recently addressed a gathering in Owerri, Imo State, where he firmly rejected claims of religious genocide in Nigeria. He emphasized that no religion is under threat in the country, highlighting the unity and shared prosperity among Nigerians. The President noted that after 65 years of independence, citizens have come to appreciate their religious and cultural differences, recognizing the benefits of diversity in education, economy, and other areas.
At the event, which marked the launch of a book titled “A Decade of Leadership in Nigeria,” President Tinubu reassured the public about the absence of religious intolerance. The book, authored by the Governor of Imo State, Sen. Hope Uzodimma, was unveiled during the ceremony. This occasion also saw the commissioning of several key infrastructure projects, including the Owerri-Mbaise-Umahia road, the Assumpta Twin flyover, and the Emmanuel Iwuayanwu Convention Centre.
The event attracted a wide range of attendees, including the APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda, former APC Chairmen Adams Oshiomhole and Umar Ganduje, governors of APC states, and the Governor of Abia State, Alex Otti. Other notable figures present included the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Deputy Speaker, Deputy Senate President, former Senate Presidents, and various political leaders.
A Message of National Pride and Unity
During his speech at the Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu Convention Centre, President Tinubu conveyed a strong message of national pride and unity. He stated that Nigeria is a proud, sovereign nation built on the faith and resilience of its people. He emphasized that churches, mosques, and traditional shrines stand side by side as symbols of unity rather than rivalry.
Tinubu also urged Nigerians not to allow outsiders to dictate who they are or sow division among them. He asserted that Nigerians love their country more than anyone else and will define themselves. He called for unity and protection of every citizen, stating that Nigeria’s diversity is a strength rather than a weakness.
Impact of the APC Government Over the Past Decade
Reflecting on the impact of the All Progressives Congress (APC) since 2015, President Tinubu highlighted significant progress. He stated that Nigeria is no longer where it was ten years ago and that the worst is over. Under the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari, the APC began stabilizing the country, investing in infrastructure, combating terrorism, and promoting accountability in public finance.
Despite challenges and mistakes, Tinubu acknowledged that the direction of Nigeria has changed for the better. He emphasized that while the APC may not be perfect, it remains purposeful and committed to preventing Nigeria from returning to previous years of stagnation. The President expressed confidence in building a Nigeria that values productivity and prepares for a sustainable future.
Addressing Critics and Emphasizing Accountability
In addressing critics of the APC administration, Tinubu pointed out that those who previously failed had their chance. He reminded the public of broken promises, such as neglected power plants, poor roads, and attempts to undermine democratic institutions through corrupt practices. He called on the APC to continue delivering on its commitments and ensuring accountability at all levels of government.
Tinubu commended Governor Uzodimma for his efforts in documenting the decade of progressive governance. He praised the governor for providing a reminder that nations must write their own stories and leaders must be accountable for their stewardship.
Economic Outlook and Regional Development
The President also spoke about the improved economic outlook, noting positive indicators across various sectors. He expressed pride in being in Owerri, a region known for its industry, intellect, and resilience. Tinubu assured the South-East that no part of Nigeria would be abandoned under the Renewed Hope initiative. He emphasized true federalism and decentralization, creating regional development commissions to bring progress closer to the people.
Tinubu highlighted the importance of holding leaders at all levels accountable and delivering on promises. He stressed that Nigerians have the right to demand transparency and effective governance.
Recognition of Educational and Agricultural Initiatives
The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, thanked the President for the NELFUND initiative, which has enabled more underprivileged children to pursue higher education. He acknowledged the President’s investments in agriculture, which have provided food for millions of Nigerians. On behalf of the National Assembly, he congratulated the performing governor for his efforts.
Governor Uzodimma, also the Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum, expressed gratitude for the support received from the federal government. He attributed the stabilization of the state’s economy to the President’s policies and consistent funding. Uzodimma mentioned that the formation of the APC was inspired by the President’s vision, leading to the creation of the book documenting these achievements.
