Early Life and Education
Dr. Ogechi Mbakwe, the Medical Director of Frontline Internal Medicine in Statesboro, Georgia, has a rich and diverse background that shaped her path to becoming a successful physician in the United States. Born into a family of Nigerian professionals, both of her parents worked in the Federal Ministry of Education and held high-ranking positions before retiring. Their careers led them to live in various parts of Nigeria, which gave Dr. Mbakwe a unique perspective on different cultures and communities.
She began her primary education in Kwara State and later moved to Pankshin in Plateau State, then Kogi, Ibadan in Oyo State, and finally Lagos, where her father retired. Her mother eventually relocated to Abuja when the ministries were moved to the Federal Capital Territory. This constant movement instilled in her a sense of adaptability and resilience from an early age.
For her secondary education, she attended St. Claire’s in Kwara State and later studied at Federal Government Girls’ College, Onitsha. She pursued her first degree in Biology at the University of Lagos, followed by her youth service in Katsina and completion in Jos. She then went on to study medicine at the University of Jos, where her housemanship began at the Military Hospital in Kaduna and was completed in Yaba, Lagos.
Transition to the United States
After completing her medical training in Nigeria, Dr. Mbakwe joined her husband in the United States. To meet the requirements of the U.S. medical system, she had to repeat her housemanship and undergo residency. Her residency in Internal Medicine was at Howard University Hospital in Washington, DC. Due to her interest in rheumatology, she also did a brief rotation at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland.
Over the years, she has worked in several high-level hospitals, including Marshfield Clinic. From there, she was hired to establish the Department of Medicine at a hospital in Washington State. Eventually, she moved to Georgia, where she started her own practice. In addition, she has been actively involved in training residents, medical students, and other healthcare professionals such as physician assistants and nurse practitioners.
Cultural Exposure and Family Influence
Growing up, Dr. Mbakwe experienced a lot of cultural exposure due to her family’s frequent relocations. Although she struggled with learning languages, she gained a deep appreciation for different traditions and ways of life. Her parents raised her and her siblings to see everyone as family, regardless of tribe. This upbringing taught her to be adaptable and comfortable in any environment.
Her parents played a significant role in shaping her ambitions. As far back as she can remember, her childhood dream was always to become a doctor. Her parents often said it was the strangest thing; they recalled that before she could even say her first proper words, she would tell people she wanted to be a doctor. Of course, no one took her seriously then. But as she grew older, her determination only grew stronger. She never considered any other career path and remained focused on her goal.
Marriage and Personal Life
Dr. Mbakwe’s marriage to her husband was arranged through a long-distance relationship. He had already moved to the United States, and after meeting her family, he expressed his desire to marry her. Their relationship developed through long conversations over the phone, eventually blossoming into love and marriage. She admits that initially, she was skeptical about this kind of arrangement, but she found that their values aligned, and they shared a strong commitment to each other.
Her husband has been a great source of support throughout her career, especially during the demanding residency period in the U.S. His encouragement helped her navigate the challenges of balancing work and family life.
Professional Traits and Success
Dr. Mbakwe attributes her success in the U.S. to her determination, patience, and commitment to excellence. She believes in staying focused on her goals and not being easily intimidated by others or situations. She relies on her training, background, and faith in God to guide her through challenges.
Patience has also been crucial in her profession. Patients are often well-informed about their conditions and may come in with many questions. However, once she proves herself, she wins their trust and respect. She emphasizes the importance of knowing her work inside and out and being prepared at all times.
Balancing Work and Family
Balancing work with family and other projects is challenging, but Dr. Mbakwe makes time for her family whenever possible. She travels with her family for vacations and mentors Nigerian students in her town. Her children are into sports, and she tries to attend their games despite her busy schedule. Her husband has been incredibly supportive, helping with household responsibilities when needed.
Encouragement for Nigerian Youths
Dr. Mbakwe encourages Nigerian youths with lofty aspirations to stay the course and believe in themselves. She emphasizes the importance of recognizing opportunities when they come, even if they don’t look like what they expected. She advises them to think carefully, make smart choices, and act decisively when opportunities present themselves.
