This commitment was expressed during a screening session conducted by the House of Representatives’ joint Committees on Defence, Army, Navy, and Air Force.

Other Service Chiefs who underwent the screening include Chief of Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal S. K. Aneke and Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral I. Abbas. The process aimed to ensure that the nominees are well-prepared to tackle the complex security challenges facing Nigeria.

Commitment to Security Reforms

In his address, Lt. General Olufemi Oluyede, confirmed as the 19th Chief of the Defence Staff, emphasized that the recent changes in leadership present an opportunity to “rejig the security architecture” of the country. He acknowledged the support from President Tinubu and the House of Representatives, expressing gratitude for the confidence placed in him.

Oluyede highlighted his extensive experience within the Nigerian Army, stating that over the past three decades, he has served at various levels of the military, contributing to significant administrative and operational achievements. He also mentioned his role in managing the services and ensuring the Army’s effectiveness.

He reiterated his intention to lead the Armed Forces with a focus on positive change, aligning with the Constitution’s requirements. His goal is to enhance the performance of the Armed Forces and ensure they function optimally.

Collaborative Efforts for National Security

Oluyede stressed the importance of a united effort from all Nigerians, strong alliances with neighboring countries, and collaboration among the Services to address current security challenges. He praised President Tinubu’s administration for its efforts in creating a secure environment for socio-economic activities.

He also assured the lawmakers that he would sustain existing programs and refine those needing improvement due to changing political and economic landscapes. Additionally, he plans to focus on improving the welfare of military personnel and their families.

Focus on Training and Welfare

Major General Waidi Shuaibu, the nominee for Chief of Army Staff, shared his vision for injecting new energy into the training of troops. With over three decades of experience in the security sector, he has participated in various operations that have had a significant impact on national security.

As Commander of the Joint Task Force, East Operations, he successfully rescued girls from terrorist areas and neutralized several commanders. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that troops receive what they are due and building upon the legacy of his predecessor.

Shuaibu pledged to create an enabling environment for socio-economic activities and ensure the free movement of citizens across the country.

Importance of the Screening Process

Hon. Babajimi Benson, Chairman of the House Committee on Defence, described the screening of Service Chiefs as a constitutional exercise. He noted that the House of Representatives has the responsibility of providing legislative oversight over the executive branch, including the confirmation of key appointments.

The screening process is crucial for ensuring accountability, transparency, and public confidence in addressing security issues. It allows the House to assess the competence, integrity, vision, and readiness of the nominees to lead the Armed Forces.

Benson highlighted the evolving threats facing Nigeria, including terrorism, cyber insecurity, and maritime challenges. He urged the nominees to approach the engagement with openness and clarity, emphasizing the need for strategic plans to restore peace and stability.

Conclusion

The screening of the Service Chiefs is a critical step in ensuring that only the most capable and visionary leaders are confirmed to serve the nation. The ultimate goal is to strengthen Nigeria’s security, peace, and prosperity through collaborative efforts and effective leadership.
