Despite unfavorable circumstances, the Taycan surpassed its EPA estimated range.

  • The 2025 Porsche Taycan keeps setting low benchmarks but surpassing them effortlessly.
  • During a recent 70 mph highway range assessment, the Taycan surpassed its EPA estimate.
  • It managed that under somewhat chilly conditions while using winter tires.

When Porsche introduced the Taycan near the start of the new decade, it received widespread acclaim for its performance but did not initially establish itself as an efficient vehicle.

Now, it stands as one of the top electric vehicles for long-distance travel. It even exceeded its EPA estimated range.

And this was further supported by the most recent range test carried out by Tom Moloughney, who hosts the show.

Moloughney steered the Taycan 4 Cross Turismo, which is the more robust, station-wagon variant of the Taycan. The whole range receives the larger update.
Performance Battery Plus
For the 2025 model year, it boasts an available usable battery capacity of 97 kilowatt-hours within a total gross package of 105 kWh. The entry-level Taycan sedan is equipped with a slightly smaller battery at 82.3 kWh.

The EPA estimated range of the Taycan 4 Cross Turismo stands at approximately 277 miles, an improvement of 42 miles over the prior model year. However, this specific vehicle was equipped with winter tires featuring more substantial tread designs designed for enhanced traction in snowy conditions rather than fuel efficiency. These tires have greater rolling resistance compared to their summer counterparts, thereby affecting overall driving distance. Additionally, Moloughney conducted his usual test circuit along the New Jersey Turnpike at a speed of 70 mph as part of these range evaluations.

The temperature was adjusted to 70 degrees Fahrenheit at the minimum fan level, and the vehicle was set to its most economical drive mode. Additionally, this particular Taycan model features a twin-engine all-wheel-drive configuration capable of delivering up to 439 horsepower. While it isn’t designed for leisurely drives, you might be astonished by its range when handled carefully.

Because of the winter tires, Moloughney anticipated that the Porsche would not meet its EPA range estimate. However, the outcome was precisely the contrary. Once the Taycan had used up 50% of its battery, it had already traveled 157 miles. During the latter part of the test, the car went an additional 145 miles, bringing the overall distance to 302 miles, surpassing the EPA’s estimated range by 25 miles.

“I’m astonished,” Moloughney remarked about the Taycan’s efficiency.

Nonetheless, the last leg of the journey involved slowly making their way to the charging station. Upon arriving at the dispenser, the battery drained completely, leaving the car dead. Tom mentioned that Porsches do not offer an additional buffer beyond 0%, which means one must strictly adhere to the indicated range and cannot depend on any extra reserve since it simply doesn’t exist.

In the second part of his driving assessment, he benefited from rising temperatures that climbed from approximately 50 degrees Fahrenheit to roughly 68 degrees, before decreasing again. The course primarily featured level ground. Using standard summer tires, Moloughney believed that the Taycan Cross Turismo had the potential to achieve up to 320 miles per full battery charge.

“I truly did not expect that to occur,” he stated.
