Keir Starmer’s Controversial Stance on Recognizing a Palestinian State
Keir Starmer, the UK Prime Minister, recently claimed that his decision to recognize a Palestinian state played a significant role in enabling Donald Trump’s Gaza peace deal. During a statement to MPs, he expressed pride in the UK’s contribution to the process. However, this claim has sparked considerable debate and criticism.
Starmer emphasized that the UK had been working “behind the scenes for months” to support the peace initiative. Despite this, he acknowledged that the deal would not have been possible without the efforts of the US president, whom he referred to as the architect of the agreement. His comments came after a highly publicized trip to Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, where he was criticized for appearing to seek recognition for his own role in the negotiations.
A Humiliating Experience at the Peace Summit
The visit to Sharm el-Sheikh turned out to be a rather awkward affair for the Prime Minister. He and other world leaders were left waiting for several hours before the signing ceremony took place. During this time, Trump received much of the attention, including meeting with freed Hamas hostages in Israel.

When he finally asked, “Where is the United Kingdom?” Starmer raised his hand and quipped, “Behind you as usual,” before stepping forward to shake Trump’s hand. However, instead of allowing him to speak, Trump continued his address, leaving Starmer in limbo.

After the event, Starmer attempted to salvage the situation by posting a photo of himself shaking hands with Trump on social media. In the caption, he praised Trump’s efforts and stated that the UK was ready to support the implementation of the peace plan. However, the incident did little to ease the criticism he faced.
Conservative Party members compared Starmer to former Chelsea footballer John Terry, who changed into full kit to lift the Champions League trophy despite not playing in the final. Critics accused him of only traveling to Egypt for a “photo op” and questioned whether his recent recognition of Palestine as a state might have jeopardized the peace process.
Tensions Over Tony Blair’s Role
Starmer also faced questions regarding Tony Blair’s involvement in the proposed Gaza peace board. While he admitted that Blair’s inclusion was still under discussion, he stated that he was more focused on the practical steps needed to implement the agreement. He added that it was up to others to decide if Blair should be part of the board.
The White House had earlier floated a peace plan that included Blair as a member of the proposed board. However, tensions arose when the US ambassador to Israel labeled a UK Cabinet minister as “delusional” for suggesting the UK played a key role in the negotiations.
An Uncomfortable Encounter with Macron
Starmer was not the only leader to experience an awkward moment at the summit. A bizarre encounter between Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron unfolded on stage. The two engaged in a handshake that quickly escalated into something resembling an arm-wrestling match. Trump placed a hand on Macron’s upper arm, and the exchange seemed intense as they swung each other’s hands from side to side.
Macron eventually managed to free himself and stepped away from the stage. Lip reader Nicola Hickling suggested that the conversation was more than just a casual greeting, with Trump asking if Macron had genuinely agreed to the terms of the deal.
