A Disappointing Weekend for Nigerian Footballers in Europe
Nigerian footballers had a tough time during the weekend as several Super Eagles stars and their compatriots faced setbacks, struggled with form, or endured frustrating performances across various leagues. From Scotland to Spain, and from Italy to the United States, the stories of these players highlight both the challenges and occasional bright spots in their campaigns.
Scotland: Kelechi Iheanacho’s Frustrating Night
Kelechi Iheanacho experienced a night of frustration as Celtic suffered a 2–0 defeat to Dundee, marking their first loss in the city in 37 years. The Nigerian forward had multiple chances but failed to convert, which summed up his evening. Despite his lively movement, Iheanacho’s finishing deserted him, with five total shots, one on target, and one against the post. His efforts could not prevent Brendan Rodgers’ side from slipping five points off the top of the Scottish Premiership table.
France: Moses Simon’s Subdued Performance
In France, Moses Simon had a subdued outing as Lens edged Paris FC 2–1 in Ligue 1. The winger started but was replaced after 63 minutes by Alimami Gory, failing to make an impact before Samson Baidoo netted the late winner. Simon registered no shots or key attacking contribution during his time on the pitch, reflecting his side’s inconsistency in front of goal. Lens now sit fourth in the table.
South Africa: Stanley Nwabali’s Struggles
Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali could do little to prevent another loss for Chippa United, as they fell 2–1 to Marumo Gallants in the South African Premier Soccer League. Returning from international duty, the Chippa captain produced four saves, including one from inside the box, and made two high claims, but was left exposed by a leaky defense. The result leaves Chippa bottom of the table with just six points from ten games — a worrying position for Nwabali and his teammates.
Belgium: Benjamin Fredrick’s Debut
Fredrick featured as a late substitute in Dender’s 3–1 home defeat to Mechelen in the Belgian Pro League. The 19-year-old centre-back, fresh from national team duty, came on in the 72nd minute and completed his defensive duties with composure, winning all his duels and making one clearance. Despite his tidy cameo, Dender remain rock bottom of the league, winless after eleven games. Fredrick has now made 11 appearances this season, starting seven and playing a total of 592 minutes.
Italy: Ademola Lookman’s Efforts
Lookman led Atalanta’s attack as they were held to a frustrating goalless draw by Lazio at the New Balance Arena in Bergamo. The Nigerian started in Ivan Juric’s 3-4-2-1 formation, flanked by Charles De Ketelaere and Kamaldeen Sulemana, while Ederon and Mario Pasalic operated in midfield. Despite Atalanta’s dominance, Lazio seemed content to defend deep and hold out for a point, managing to frustrate the hosts throughout the first half. After the interval, Atalanta returned with renewed urgency, and Lookman came close to breaking the deadlock with a close-range header that narrowly missed the target. The chances continued to fall for La Dea as the game progressed, but they found Ivan Provedel in inspired form. The Lazio goalkeeper produced a string of superb saves, including a spectacular stop to deny Lookman’s low strike late on, while Davide Zappacosta was also denied by the woodwork. Lookman, who was replaced by Daniel Maldini in the 82nd minute, finished with two shots, one on target, and an expected goals value of 0.74. It was an industrious but luckless outing for the Nigerian, whose sharp movements and positioning constantly troubled Lazio’s back line but ultimately failed to yield the breakthrough Atalanta deserved.
Kazakhstan: Geoffrey Chinedu’s Hat-Trick
In a weekend of few positives, Geoffrey Chinedu provided one of the rare bright spots, scoring a hat-trick in Astana’s thrilling 5–3 win over Aktobe in Kazakhstan. The forward struck in the 10th, 34th and 50th minutes, each goal underscoring his poacher’s instinct and composure in front of goal. Chinedu’s performance earned him the Man of the Match award and took his season tally to eight goals in 24 appearances. The 28-year-old’s resurgence has been key to Astana’s attacking form, as they continue their pursuit of league honours.
Spain: Edna Imade’s Brilliance
In Spain, Edna Imade continued her electrifying form with a brace as Real Sociedad cruised to a 3–0 Liga F win over Eibar. The Nigerian forward converted from the spot early in the second half before heading home her second, guiding her side back into second place with 17 points. Imade has now scored six goals in six league matches, netting in five straight games, and remains one of the most clinical forwards in Spain. Her exclusion from Nigeria’s WAFCON qualifier squad remains surprising given her consistency, work rate and goal-scoring prowess. Sociedad’s win sets up a tantalising clash with Barcelona in the next round, one that could redefine the title race.
United States: Victor Olatunji and Alhassan Yusuf
In the MLS, Victor Olatunji fired Real Salt Lake into the playoffs with a crucial brace in a 2–2 draw against St. Louis City on Decision Day. Olatunji opened the scoring in the 17th minute and doubled the lead before half-time. Though St. Louis fought back, RSL’s point was enough to secure their wildcard spot. The 26-year-old, signed for over $2 million in August, now has four goals and an assist in eight matches. His strong chemistry with compatriot William Agada has been instrumental to Salt Lake’s playoff push.
Alhassan Yusuf marked his return from injury with a goal and an assist as New England Revolution played out a 2–2 thriller against Chicago Fire. Yusuf struck just 44 seconds into the match, capitalizing on a defensive lapse to score the club’s fastest goal of the season. He later assisted Carles Gil, rounding off a commanding performance that ended his six-month goal drought. It was a fitting end to the MLS regular season for Yusuf, who featured in all 34 league matches and reaffirmed his place as one of Nigeria’s most consistent performers in the United States.
