Escalating Violence and Security Measures in Northern Nigeria
A series of violent attacks have rocked various parts of northern Nigeria, with bandits and suspected terrorists targeting communities, churches, and villages. These incidents highlight the ongoing security challenges faced by local populations and the efforts being made by security agencies to restore order.
In Kogi State, a group of suspected bandits attacked Ejiba town in Yagba West Local Government on Sunday. During a church service at a new Cherubim and Seraphim Church, the attackers kidnapped the pastor, his wife, and an unspecified number of worshippers. An eyewitness, Adegboyega Oguns, described how congregants fled in panic as the attack unfolded. The Kogi State government has since intensified surveillance and patrols, launching a manhunt for the perpetrators. Commissioner for Information and Communication, Kingsley Fanwo, assured the public that security agencies are actively working to rescue the kidnapped individuals. He also urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to authorities.
Meanwhile, in Kano State, gunmen suspected to be bandits killed an elderly woman and abducted three residents during an attack on Yankamaye village late Saturday night. The raid occurred around 11 p.m., catching many residents off guard as they were asleep. Eyewitnesses reported that the attackers arrived on motorcycles before proceeding on foot to avoid detection.
In Sokoto State, suspected bandits stormed Chacho community in Wurno Local Government Area early Saturday morning, abducting dozens of residents, including a bride, her friends, and wedding guests. A resident, Engr. Hadiyatullahi Hamisu Tarah, who first raised the alarm on social media, described the attack as “a devastating blow to families preparing for a joyful occasion.” The incident has left the community in shock, with many praying for the safe return of the abducted individuals.
Military Operations Against Bandits and Terrorists
The Nigerian military has been actively engaged in counterinsurgency operations across the country. In Katsina State, the Nigerian Air Force launched air raids on hideouts suspected to be used by ISWAP/Boko Haram militants. According to Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, Director of Public Relations and Information for the Nigerian Air Force, these operations, part of Operation FANSAN YAMMA and Operation HADIN KAI, involved precision strikes that disrupted multiple hostile movements. The strikes targeted key structures and logistics centers, significantly weakening the terrorist network.
In the North-East, the Nigerian Air Force provided critical support to troops of the 28 Task Force Brigade during a multi-directional assault by ISWAP/Boko Haram fighters on Chibok. Four airstrikes were delivered on regrouping and retreating terrorists, inflicting heavy casualties and preventing the insurgents from reorganizing. This integrated air-ground response ensured that the attackers were overwhelmed, safeguarding residents and averting a potential major setback for security in the area.
Rescues and Ongoing Challenges
In Borno State, the Nigerian Army successfully rescued 12 teenage girls abducted by Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists in Mussa District. The victims, aged between 15 and 20, were kidnapped while harvesting crops on their family farmlands. They were freed following a swift, intelligence-led operation by troops of Operation HADIN KAI. The rescued girls have been evacuated to a secure military facility where they are receiving comprehensive medical care, psychological support, and debriefing. Their recovery has brought immense relief to the community, which had been gripped by fear.
In Kano State, troops of Operation MESA under the 3rd Brigade of the Nigerian Army rescued seven persons abducted during a bandit attack on Yankamaye Cikin Gari village. The operation followed a distress call from the village, where a large group of bandits had stormed the area, abducting 10 residents and killing a 60-year-old woman. A combined team of soldiers and police operatives pursued the attackers, leading to the successful rescue of the captives.
Ongoing Threats and Calls for Action
Despite these efforts, violence continues to plague several regions. In Plateau State, an attack on a community in Chakfem Chiefdom left three people dead and several others injured. Hon. Ishaya David Lalu, a member representing the Mangu/Bokkos Federal Constituency, condemned the attack, calling it a clear indication that more decisive and coordinated action is urgently needed. He highlighted the failure of timely response, raising serious questions about the effectiveness of security operations.
As the situation remains volatile, security agencies continue to pursue ISWAP remnants and bandit groups across affected areas. The Nigerian government and military are working to restore peace and protect civilians, but the challenges persist.
