Community food drive aims to feed students over summer break

GLASGOW, Ky. (WBKO) – As part of the nationwide kickoff for America’s 250th birthday, WCLU and Commonwealth Broadcasting have partnered with the Barren County Historical Society to host a community food drive benefiting local students in Glasgow and Barren County.

The effort began following a proclamation from the mayor and Barren County judge/executive recognizing the initiative.

The campaign is part of a broader push led by the Kentucky Historical Society to encourage local communities to take part in the America 250 celebration through acts of service.

Todd Steinberg, operations manager at Commonwealth Broadcasting and a member of the Barren County Historical Society, said the food drive is about more than marking a milestone.

“We decided to sponsor a community food drive to help out Glasgow and Barren County school families,” Steinberg said. “If folks could just pick up an extra non-perishable food item and help donate, that would be great.”

The drive focuses on collecting items that can help bridge the nutrition gap for students who lose access to free breakfast and lunch during the summer months.

Chris Hutchins, General Manager at Commonwealth Broadcasting, emphasized the need for items children can prepare on their own.

“We’re looking for breakfast items like cereal, granola bars, instant oatmeal, and also canned meats, vegetables, and fruits—the good stuff,” Hutchins said. “Anything that’s nutritious and easy for kids to prepare while they’re at home during the summer.”

Donations will directly support Glasgow Independent Schools through their Youth Services Center, and Barren County Schools through the Reads and Feeds program—both of which provide food assistance to students and families in need.

Organizers said they’re accepting donations until 9 p.m. Friday, April 18 at Houchens IGA on S. L. Rogers Wells Boulevard in Glasgow.

“It’s been great to see the community come together,” Hutchins added. “It’s not about school rivalries or colors—it’s about taking care of the kids.”
