Phil Mafah’s Season-Starting Injured Reserve Setback
For many rookie players, the upcoming roster cuts are a high-stakes moment that can determine their NFL futures. However, for Dallas Cowboys rookie running back Phil Mafah, this period is proving to be more challenging than expected. According to reports from ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, Mafah will begin the season on Injured Reserve (IR), marking a significant hurdle in his early career.
While not a season-ending injury, being placed on IR means Mafah will miss the start of the 2024 campaign. The NFL allows teams to place up to two players on IR before finalizing their 53-player rosters. These players are typically kept out for the entire season unless their injuries are deemed less severe. In Mafah’s case, the Cowboys have plans for his return later in the year, indicating that his injury is not as critical as others.
A Promising Preseason Performance
Mafah had shown promise during the preseason, with solid performances that hinted at potential impact for the Cowboys. Over three games, he accumulated 15 carries for 59 yards and a touchdown. While his position on the depth chart remained uncertain, his performance suggested he could have been a valuable addition to the team.
Before entering the NFL, Mafah played four seasons at Clemson, where he became a key player. His first two years saw him accumulate 166 carries for 807 yards and seven touchdowns, along with 16 receptions for 98 yards. By his junior year, he had truly emerged as a standout, recording 395 carries for 2,080 yards and 21 touchdowns, plus 42 catches for 208 yards. His contributions were vital to some strong Clemson offenses, and he carried a lot of hype heading into the NFL.
Stronger Running Back Depth for the Cowboys
The Cowboys’ running back position has seen considerable improvement this season compared to last year, when it was a major weakness. With quarterback Dak Prescott sidelined, the team struggled to establish a consistent ground game. This issue is expected to be less of a concern this year, thanks to several new additions and experienced players.
Javonte Williams, acquired from Denver, is set to be the primary ball carrier. Known for his power and ability to gain yardage, he also contributes in the passing game. Fifth-round pick Jaydon Blue brings speed and versatility, while Miles Sanders, signed from Carolina, offers quality backup support. Deuce Vaughn, a second-year back and son of a Dallas-area scout, remains a viable option on the depth chart.
Mafah’s role within this group was unclear, but there was speculation that he could have challenged for a spot alongside Vaughn or even Sanders. However, with his injury, the Cowboys have an opportunity to delay decisions about which players to cut. They can now keep Mafah on IR until he is ready to return, allowing them to reassess the depth chart at a later date.
Looking Ahead
Despite the setback, Mafah’s future with the Cowboys still appears promising. The team has shown confidence in his potential, and his mid-season return is a positive sign. As the season progresses, fans will be watching closely to see how he adapts and contributes once he returns to action. For now, the focus is on recovery and preparing for a possible impact later in the year.
