Leung Chai-yan, who is the daughter of ex-Hong Kong Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying, passed away at the age of 33.
In an early Wednesday Facebook post, the former leader announced that his daughter passed away unexpectedly yet calmly in her sleep. He mentioned that a few days prior, she had chosen to receive the flu vaccination.
Due to the efforts of the police and forensic investigators, we can now eliminate the possibility of suicide and other speculations,” Leung stated. “We appreciate your concerns, understanding, and support during this extremely challenging period for our family.
The police informed HKFP on Wednesday that they had received a report from an employee working at a serviced apartment in Shau Kei Wan. The incident was reported at 10:40 pm on Tuesday regarding an unconscious woman discovered lying on the floor inside her room.
A medical team from an ambulance verified the fatality at the location. They mentioned that the reason for this is still being looked into.
Leung Chai-yan was his second among three daughters. After studying at the German Swiss International School, she relocated to the United Kingdom. There, she joined the London School of Economics for her legal education; however, she abandoned this path to pursue a career in entertainment instead.
During her father’s time as party leader, she frequently appeared in gossip magazines due to her social media posts detailing the strained dynamics within her family. In 2015, she was apparently admitted to a medical facility where psychologists were treating her following her sharing pictures that hinted at self-inflicted harm and allegations against her mother of mistreatment.
Leung Chun-ying, who served as the city’s leader from 2012 to 2017, stated that family pressures were behind his decision not to run for a second term as chief executive.
