The initial 1977 cinema release of Star Wars is scheduled to be screened on the big screen this summer in London, which marks its first public showing in many years.
The classic science fiction film will be screened as part of the BFI’s Film on Film festival on June 12th.
The BFI mentioned that this particular version of the film is seldom shown publicly following the release of George Lucas’s special editions in the 1990s, which modified certain plot elements and introduced additional CGI characters.
Nowadays, only the revised editions can be found on official streaming sites and Blu-rays, which makes viewing the movie’s initial version quite uncommon.
The senior curator of fiction at the BFI National Archive, James Bell, stated that the festival serves as a “genuine showcase” for the national collection.
“Each print within the program stands as a distinct entity, carrying its own narrative of existence, and proudly displays every mark and imperfection,” he stated.
They bring us tantalizingly close to history, and we’re eager for viewers to encounter them all.
We’re thankful for the substantial backing provided by our philanthropy advocates, which has enabled us to present a robust and engaging lineup ensuring the continuation of Film on Film.
Lucas’s modifications to crucial plot elements, such as the introduction of Jabba the Hutt and enhancements in visual effects, have consistently split opinions among fans.
The most contentious alteration involved modifying the sequence where Harrison Ford’s character, Han Solo, kills the bounty hunter Greedo.
Initially, Solo fires first. Nonetheless, the 1997 re-release altered the scene to depict Ford’s character acting in self-defense.
The scene was subject to additional modifications, with different editions of the movie depicting both characters shooting simultaneously.
One of the festival’s standout features includes an exclusive showing of the initial U.S. pilot episode from “Twin Peaks,” introduced by lead actor Kyle MacLachlan.
The BFI’s Film on Film Festival will be held at BFI Southbank and BFI Imax from June 12th to 15th.
