A Journey of Resilience and Triumph

From underdogs to unbeaten champions, the Dolphins Basketball Club made history in the 2025 Zenith Bank Women’s Basketball League playoffs. Their flawless run to victory marked their second championship in a decade, a feat that came seven years after the passing of their founder, Wale Aboderin. The triumph was not just a celebration of sport but also a tribute to the legacy of a man who laid the foundation for the club’s success.

The journey was far from easy. Just a season prior, the team faced heartbreak when three key players defected to rivals MFM, leaving them without the necessary strength to compete in the playoffs. However, with the guidance of coach Peter Akindele, the team turned adversity into motivation. A young and determined squad emerged, proving that belief and hard work could overcome even the most daunting challenges.

A Flawless Run to Glory

Dolphins’ perfect campaign reached its peak on a dramatic Saturday when they defeated First Bank 61-55 in overtime at the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium. This victory solidified their status as champions and marked the culmination of months of preparation and perseverance.

Coach Akindele reflected on the significance of the win, stating, “Nobody believed Dolphins would win the women’s league this year. Nobody believed it.” For him, the victory was more than just a title; it was a personal achievement. It was his first women’s league title in Nigeria, and he felt a deep connection to the late founder, Wale Aboderin, whose vision and investments had shaped the club’s growth.

Aboderin played a pivotal role in building the club’s infrastructure, including a clubhouse and gymnasium that became the backbone of the team’s development. Akindele shared how the late philanthropist had helped him in the past, providing support to players whose families couldn’t afford school fees. This personal connection fueled his determination to honor Aboderin’s legacy by leading the team to victory.

Overcoming Adversity

The road to the championship was not without its obstacles. Last season, Dolphins were on the verge of a title when three players left for MFM, disrupting their momentum and preventing them from reaching the playoffs. Rather than succumbing to defeat, Akindele rebuilt the team around a core of young talent developed through the club’s grassroots program in Sango Ota, Ogun State.

This strategic approach paid off. Dolphins entered the playoffs with confidence, having already defended their D.K. Olukoya Women’s Basketball Championship title in July. They overcame the loss of half their previous championship squad to emerge victorious against MFM, showcasing their resilience and skill.

A Season of Dominance

The 2025 season began with a statement of intent. On opening night, Dolphins stunned defending champions MFM with a 51-41 victory. Despite a strong start from MFM, Dolphins staged a remarkable fourth-quarter comeback, securing a win that set the tone for the rest of the playoffs.

Team captain Gbemisola Samuel, leading the squad for the first time in a major championship, recognized the importance of that opening win. “Once we won our first game, we knew we had to aim for the final,” she said. Her words proved prophetic as Dolphins methodically dismantled every opponent, including a decisive 81-45 win over Nigeria Customs and a close semi-final victory over Royal Aces.

Youth Power and Legacy

A defining feature of Dolphins’ success was the dominance of young players. Coach Akindele took pride in the fact that 90% of his squad came from the club’s grassroots program. This focus on local development aligned with Aboderin’s original vision, which emphasized both athletic and academic growth for players.

One standout player, Ajani Amjalat, exemplified this philosophy. At just 16 years old, she became one of the top three-point shooters in the tournament, proving that age was no barrier to excellence. Akindele saw this as a reflection of the strength of the club’s youth system.

Current director Olumide Oyedeji, a former Olympian, has continued to uphold Aboderin’s values. He expressed pride in the team’s achievements, noting that the success was a testament to the foundation laid by the late founder.

Looking Ahead: Continental Ambitions

With domestic success secured, Dolphins now turn their attention to continental competition. Both Dolphins and First Bank have qualified for the FIBA Africa Zone 3 Women’s Basketball League Qualifiers, offering an opportunity to represent Nigeria on the international stage.

Coach Akindele is optimistic about the team’s prospects, stating, “We have a goal and a dream, and it is not limited to Nigeria.” He plans to scout for more experienced players to strengthen the squad and make a strong statement on the continent.

A Legacy That Lives On

Throughout the season, Dolphins received unwavering support from Aboderin’s widow, Titilayo, who has remained actively involved with the team. Her commitment to preserving her husband’s legacy has been a source of inspiration for players and staff alike.

For Akindele, knowing that Aboderin’s family continues to support the program validates the effort put into this championship. “If the late chairman could see me now, he would be happy,” he said.

A New Era of Excellence

As Dolphins celebrate their perfect championship campaign, questions about sustaining success naturally arise. Akindele acknowledges that player turnover is inevitable but remains confident in the strength of his development system. “I am not scared of losing players because they cannot be with me forever. What I know for sure is that I always have replacements.”

Captain Samuel echoed this optimism, assuring fans that Dolphins would not face another decade-long wait for a title. “Dolphins fans will not wait another 10 years. This is just the beginning.”

The 2025 Zenith Bank Women’s Basketball League championship will be remembered for the way Dolphins achieved their success. Against low expectations and with a roster built primarily from teenage players, they demonstrated that with dedication, planning, and belief, any team can reach greatness.

Their victory serves as a powerful reminder of Aboderin’s vision and the enduring impact of his investments in infrastructure and youth development. Most importantly, it inspires young players across Nigeria who dream of basketball success. In an era where many seek opportunities abroad, Dolphins have shown that domestic programs can still achieve excellence through commitment and proper planning.

As they prepare for continental competition, Dolphins carry not just their own ambitions but the hopes of Nigerian basketball. Their perfect domestic campaign has established them as worthy representatives, equipped with the youth, energy, and defensive discipline needed to compete at the highest level.

The wait for championship number three begins now, but given the foundation they have established and the pipeline of talent they continue to develop, it may not be nearly as long as the decade between their first and second titles. For now, the party should continue as the Dolphins relish their moment as the invincible champions who defied every odd to reclaim their place at the summit of Nigerian women’s basketball.
