The Tragic Crash and the Outrage Over Dangerous Driving
The recent tragic crash on the A66, which claimed the lives of two police officers and five young people, has sparked a national conversation about the dangers of reckless driving and the glorification of such behavior. The crash occurred when a Volkswagen Passat, fleeing from police, drove the wrong way on the dual carriageway and collided head-on with a patrol car driven by PC Matt Blades and PC Tom Clough. Both officers were killed instantly, along with four other youths in the Passat and a fifth person who died later in hospital. The incident has been linked to a broader wave of organized crime in the Teesside area, according to Cleveland Police.
In the aftermath of the crash, several videos surfaced online showing members of the gang engaging in high-speed chases and dangerous stunts. These videos have drawn criticism for potentially glorifying the behavior that led to the tragedy. One video, posted on TikTok, showed one of the suspects, Makai Saddington, speeding through a residential area while being pursued by police. Another clip featured Saddington in a green Nissan before it was set on fire.
Cleveland Police believe the activities of the two vehicles involved in the crash were connected, with both using cloned number plates to avoid detection. It has also been revealed that four of the youths killed in the Passat had extensive criminal records, including convictions for drug offenses, assault, and robbery.
The Public Response and Vigils
In the wake of the tragedy, two very different vigils were held to honor the victims. One was a solemn moment of reflection at St John The Evangelist Church, where community members gathered to pay their respects to the two officers. Labour MP Anna Turley attended the event, calling the loss of the officers “a tragic incident.”
In contrast, another gathering in South Bank, Middlesbrough, drew attention for its controversial nature. Balaclava-clad youths, many of whom were associated with the gang, held a “vigil” that included revving motorbikes, flares, and fireworks. Some residents criticized the event as a mockery of the lives lost, with one grandmother stating, “This is nothing but a mockery of the lives of those policemen.”
Despite the controversy, some attendees defended the event, arguing that the youths were loved and should not be forgotten. One female attendee said, “Jakub was a lovely, caring lad and he’s somebody’s son and somebody’s brother… they do matter.”
