A Decade of Hip-Hop: Navio’s 10th Concert and the Evolution of a Legend

Hip hop artiste Daniel Kigozi, known as Navio, is set to perform live at Kampala Serena Hotel this evening. This marks his 10th concert in a remarkable 22-year career. The event will feature an orchestra, showcasing a bold new direction for the veteran rapper.

Navio shared insights during an interview with Isaac Ssejombwe, explaining that this concert is more than just a celebration—it’s a statement. “Everyone has a reason why they do a concert,” he said. For Navio, it’s about reflecting on the progress of hip-hop this year and setting a closing note for the genre. He emphasized that while there have been successes and failures across all genres, this concert represents a culmination of efforts and a commitment to excellence.

A Legacy of Quality and Innovation

Navio’s journey has always been defined by a relentless pursuit of quality. From the early days with Klear-Kut, he insisted on high standards in sound production, video quality, and live performances. “We were insisting on using a band when everyone told us we were insane and should just use a CD because it was cheaper,” he recalled. This dedication extended to touring across Africa, from Nigeria to Zimbabwe and Zanzibar, participating in festivals like Bussara and Haifa.

The concert also serves as a challenge for Navio and his team. “This is not six channels of sound coming through. This is 40, 50 channels of sound,” he admitted. However, he remains confident in his team’s ability to handle the task. His most memorable performance? “I did six clothing changes for Half the Legend at Katikati in 2009. That was pretty serious.”

A Star-Studded Lineup

The concert promises an impressive lineup of guest performers. Geosteady, Fefe Busi, legendary Babaluku, Lyrical G, and rising talents like Lucas Black, Dennis E, Dahomey, and OG Stache are set to join. Additionally, there will be a surprise act from Navio’s own family, highlighting the personal and professional growth over the years.

Despite the excitement, Navio acknowledges the pressure. “There is always a chance, of course. I feel like people put a lot of pressure on people to turn up for events.” While he humorously mentioned Bobi Wine’s presidential campaign, he remains focused on the celebration of his milestone.

A New Era for NavCorp

NavCorp, the organization founded by Navio, aims to support artists while operating as a business entity. This year marks a shift, as NavCorp plans to step outside and select emerging talents who can carry forward the legacy built over two decades. “We are here to disrupt. We are here to show people that hip-hop can work in this country,” Navio said.

Looking Ahead

With 10 concerts under his belt, Navio is often asked if retirement is on the horizon. “Some people are already saying this is my last show,” he admitted. However, he remains open to the future. “I hope people come through and we share my music before I go and become a full-time farmer.”

The concert will also feature a Klear Kut set, bringing together three artists from different continents. “The magic of Klear Kut was born on the stage, all of us together,” Navio explained. He also hinted at future projects, including a compilation of his greatest hits in an orchestral format.

A Cultural Milestone

Navio reflected on the impact of his song “Nawuliranga,” which opened doors for him and set a new standard for hip-hop in Uganda. “It was such a natural progression from the TV show to taking a studio around with us,” he said. The project involved 10 songs with diverse cultural and linguistic elements, making it a pioneering effort.

His collaboration with Keith Sweat and Major Seven further solidified his reputation. “Major Seven heard me rap once and he was like, yo bro, you got it bro,” Navio shared. This led to opportunities in the U.S., where he was encouraged to move and expand his reach.

A Celebration of Music and Family

For Navio, family is a source of peace and inspiration. “I have never found true peace of mind other than when I’m with my family,” he said. This sentiment is reflected in the concert, which blends his artistic vision with personal milestones.

As the night unfolds, fans can expect a night filled with music, memories, and a celebration of hip-hop’s evolution. With a lineup that honors the past and looks toward the future, Navio’s 10th concert is more than just a milestone—it’s a testament to the power of perseverance and passion.
