Addressing Gun Violence Through Community Action
In Jackson, Mississippi, a growing movement is taking shape to combat the persistent issue of gun violence. This initiative, led by student leaders from the Jackson State University (JSU) Votes group, has evolved into the Girls Against Gun Violence coalition. Founded two years ago, the coalition has become a powerful voice in the community, working to create meaningful change.
The mission of the Girls Against Gun Violence is to support law enforcement in developing innovative strategies to reduce gun violence while fostering better relationships between communities and local authorities. This effort began as a response to voter apathy, but it quickly shifted focus when students encountered a pressing socio-political issue. According to Jacobi Grant, an adjunct professor at JSU, this challenge provided an opportunity to educate students on the importance of voting and how elected officials can help address critical issues like gun violence.
“Originally, this group of students began fighting voter apathy and voter antipathy until a socio-political issue plagued them. And that was my opportunity to explain. This is why I’m teaching you why voting is important. Because the people that are on the ballot to vote for serve civilly can help you devise solutions to this problem,” said Grant.
Jackson’s mayor, John Hohrn, has also taken a proactive stance on public safety. He emphasized that the city’s open carry laws contribute to the prevalence of guns in the community, which in turn affects crime rates. The mayor highlighted the need for creative solutions and community engagement to address these challenges.
Events Focused on Healing and Awareness
To raise awareness and promote dialogue, the Girls Against Gun Violence coalition has organized a series of events during the Labor Day weekend, called “Nights of No Violence.” These events aim to bring the community together in a safe and positive environment.
On Friday, August 29, the event kicks off with “One Night in Vegas: Glitz, Glam, & No Guns Gala.” The evening will feature live music, free food, and interactive games such as roulette and card games. A Gatsby-themed setting will encourage positive interactions between youth and law enforcement. The event will take place from 7:30 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. at the Jackson State University Student Center.
On Sunday, August 31, the coalition will host “Sunday Brunch & Culture Discussion.” This event includes a museum tour at the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum, highlighting the history of violence against minorities. Following the tour, attendees will enjoy a community brunch and participate in a discussion on reducing self-inflicted violence within African American communities. Faith-based institutions will provide additional support for this event.
Expanding the Initiative
Plans are already underway for future events that will extend beyond the Labor Day weekend. The coalition is looking to launch a discussion tour within the Jackson Public School District (JPS), aiming to engage students and educators in ongoing conversations about gun violence and its impact on the community.
Angel Edwards, a JSU student and member of the Girls Against Gun Violence coalition, shared her vision for the initiative. She hopes that the efforts in Jackson will inspire similar movements across the country and even globally.
“We are hoping that this initiative will happen all around the world. We’re hoping that this will be the start for this initiative to create on to other campuses in other communities. Gun violence is not only in Jackson, it’s all over the world. So, we’re hoping that everyone will come together and see this as a jumpstart to that initiative,” said Edwards.
Support services will be available to those attending the events, ensuring that participants have access to resources and assistance if needed.
As the Girls Against Gun Violence coalition continues to grow, its message of unity, education, and action remains clear. By bringing together students, community leaders, and local authorities, the initiative aims to create lasting change and foster a safer future for all.
