Residents of Ajao Estate, located within the Oshodi/Isolo Local Government Area of Lagos State, have raised concerns about the deteriorating condition of key road networks in their community. These roads are essential for daily commuting and commercial activities, yet they remain in a state of disrepair, causing significant challenges for the local population.
The residents expressed frustration over years of unmet promises from both local and state governments. They emphasized that despite repeated appeals, there has been little to no improvement in the infrastructure. Several streets in the community are currently suffering from poor maintenance. These include Fatai Irawo, Olutosin Ajayi, Awoniyi, Joe Best, and Joy Avenue, all of which link to Lateef Salami Street. Additional affected areas are Cohbam Street, Tiamiyu Street, Stella Solanke, Ajibade Street, Seth Adedeji, and Akinsanya Street.
An 88-year-old resident, Chief Olu Isijola, described the situation as “absolutely disgraceful.” He pointed out that the estate is located just minutes away from the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, yet it remains neglected. He highlighted that the government has failed to address the concerns raised by the community over the years, even though there are regular protests and complaints.

The condition of the roads has had far-reaching consequences. Some streets are used by warehouses, leading to heavy-duty trucks traversing already damaged roads. This has worsened the situation, creating hazardous conditions for residents and vehicles alike.
One street observed by the correspondent was Ajbade Oke Street, which appeared steep and unstable. Residents like Isijola noted that these roads were never designed to handle such heavy traffic. He explained that some individuals have converted their apartments into warehouses, allowing trailers to park on the streets, further compounding the issue.
In addition to this, some inner streets are waterlogged, making it difficult for vehicles to navigate through them. Commuters have reported damage to their cars, forcing some residents to park outside the community to avoid further harm.
Social and Economic Consequences
The impact of the poor road conditions extends beyond transportation. A commuter named Dare Fasade shared how the roads have caused significant damage to vehicles, leading many to leave the area altogether. Another resident, Tony, mentioned that the road conditions have made it difficult for friends and relatives to visit him, with many complaining about the difficulty of navigating the roads.
Business owners in the area also face challenges. A fashion designer named Dunni described how customers avoid visiting her store due to the poor road conditions. She explained that she often has to take her products to the main road to reach potential customers, highlighting the negative effect on sales.
Drainage and Long-Term Neglect
Some streets lack proper drainage systems, exacerbating the problem. A resident named Alhaji Sodiq noted that his street, Olutosin Ajayi, has never been tarred, despite repeated claims by the council. He claimed that there are files at the council that confirm this neglect, but nothing has been done.
The situation has also affected hotels in the area. A resident who preferred anonymity mentioned that visitors often complain about the road conditions, leading to a decline in business for hotels located deeper within the community.

The issues in Ajao Estate reflect a larger pattern of infrastructural neglect across parts of Lagos. In recent reports, similar concerns have been raised in other areas, including Isheri-Igando in Alimosho and Ikorodu, Akowonjo, and Lekki. These communities have also experienced problems with road conditions and drainage, leading to flooding and further damage.
Despite these ongoing challenges, residents continue to voice their concerns without seeing meaningful action from authorities. The lack of response has led to growing frustration among the community, who feel ignored and overlooked.
