MTN Nigeria Honors Super Falcons with Generous Reward After Historic WAFCON Victory

MTN Nigeria has made a significant gesture of support for the Nigerian Super Falcons by presenting a reward of 150 million naira following their remarkable victory at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). The celebration took place during a special breakfast reception hosted in Lagos, where key stakeholders from the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF), female leaders across various sectors, and MTN executives gathered to honor the team’s achievement.

The event highlighted not only the team’s success but also MTN’s ongoing commitment to football, inclusion, and youth empowerment. The Super Falcons’ triumph was one of the most memorable in the tournament’s history, as they overcame a 2-0 deficit against Morocco on their home soil to win 3-2, securing their 10th WAFCON title. This victory solidified their position as Africa’s most decorated women’s team.

During the event, MTN’s Chief Marketing Officer, Onyinye Ikenna-Emeka, expressed her admiration for the team’s perseverance and determination. She emphasized that the Super Falcons’ success is an inspiration for all Nigerian women. “Nigeria has won the Women’s African Cup of Nations 10 times out of 13 editions. This is no small feat. It is a testament to how determined Nigerian women can be when they set out to achieve something,” she said. “Your final match exemplifies our value of ‘Can Do’—with integrity and passion.”

As the official telecommunications partner of the NFF, MTN played a vital role in supporting the team throughout the competition. The company presented the 150 million naira reward, with 115 million naira allocated to the players and 35 million to the technical team. MTN director Ifueko Okauru explained the distribution of the funds, underscoring the importance of recognizing both the athletes and the coaching staff for their contributions.

Dr. Karl Toriola, CEO of MTN Nigeria, spoke about the company’s long-term investment in the NFF and the positive outcomes it has generated. “We have followed you through every match, every challenge, and even some losses. We believe in the power of connection—not just through technology, but through our shared values and unity,” he said. “Today, we are proud to say that our efforts have not been in vain.”

Toriola praised the Super Falcons as more than just athletes, calling them inspirations and role models for young girls across Nigeria. He emphasized the importance of continued support from the NFF, the federal government, and private organizations to help the team reach global standards.

Captain of the Super Falcons, Rashidat Ajibade, expressed her gratitude to MTN and its leadership for the warm reception and support. “We feel valued, honored, and respected,” she said. “This only inspires us to do better and keep inspiring the next generation.” She dedicated the 10th title to all past players and stressed the team’s ambition to become global contenders.

The celebration featured a classical string quartet, a soul-Afrobeats choir, and a performance by singer Praiz, which added to the festive atmosphere. The event coincided with Pan African Women’s Day, making it a fitting occasion to honor the strength and achievements of Nigerian women both on and off the pitch.

This moment of recognition serves as a reminder of what Nigerian women can accomplish when supported by belief, investment, and opportunity. The Super Falcons’ victory is not just a sporting milestone, but a powerful symbol of resilience and determination.
