A Story of Resilience and Divine Intervention
The words from the Bible, “The Lord makes poor, and makes rich: he brings low, and lifts up. He raises the poor from the dust, He lifts the needy from the garbage heap to seat them with nobles, And He gives them a seat of honor as an inheritance; For the pillars of the earth are the Lord’s, And He set the world on them,” have always been a source of comfort and inspiration for many. These verses were especially meaningful in recent times when my wife, the love of my life, celebrated her ascension to a new level of success.
In Epe, Lagos State, she took part in a mission that brought hope to the poor and the needy. Her efforts over the past four years have included distributing food, clothes, and cash to those who need it most. This year, the mission coincided with her birthday, making the event even more significant. Standing on the podium, she addressed a diverse crowd of Christians, Muslims, and traditional worshippers, offering encouragement and sharing her story.
Her journey has not been easy. She has lived through poverty and hardship, often having to go without food. As a child, she hawked gari for her grandmother, walking barefoot through the streets of Epe. The same gari she sold was what they ate every day. Today, she is able to give back to her community, driven by the belief that God lifts the poor from the dust.
A Life of Struggle and Triumph
Life for her family in Epe and Ketu was tough. They lived in a small one-room house where five people shared a hundred square feet of space. The family had to ration food and sleep on traditional mats on a cold concrete floor. The house was near a canal, and during the rainy season, it would flood with dirty water. Despite these challenges, she never gave up.
Our love story began during this difficult time. The first time I visited her home, I knew she was the one for me. She faced poverty with grace and dignity, and that quality left a lasting impression on me. Her journey from hardship to success is a testament to the power of perseverance and faith.
She is now a graduate of hospitality and tourism from one of America’s top universities. Her education allowed her to break free from the cycle of poverty, and she now uses her resources to help others. Her story is not just about personal achievement—it’s about giving back to the community that shaped her.
Global Examples of Overcoming Poverty
There are many stories of individuals who rose from poverty to achieve great things. These global figures are proof that God still lifts the poor from the dunghill and places them on the hilltop.
Chester A. Arthur, the 21st U.S. President, was born into a family of Irish immigrants with limited resources. He worked as a schoolteacher, served in the Civil War, and eventually climbed the political ladder. Woodrow Wilson, the 28th president, came from a modest background as the son of a Presbyterian pastor. He earned a PhD in political science, becoming the only president with a doctoral degree.
James A. Garfield, the 20th president, was born into hardship in a log cabin in Ohio. He worked odd jobs to fund his education, which helped him rise to prominence. Calvin Coolidge, known as “Silent Cal,” grew up in rural Vermont and became a respected leader. His quiet dignity reflected his humble beginnings. Harry S. Truman, considered the poorest president to enter office, faced financial struggles throughout his life. Despite this, he became a significant figure in American history.
A Message of Hope
These stories remind us that no matter how difficult our circumstances may seem, there is always hope. God is still in the business of lifting the poor from the dunghill and seating them with kings. If you are facing hardship, remember that your story is not over. There is more to you, and the best of you is yet to be seen.
As my wife continues to give back to her community, she inspires others to believe in their potential. Her journey is a powerful reminder that with faith, determination, and the right support, anyone can overcome adversity and achieve greatness.
