A Disappointing Performance by Nepal Against the West Indies
Nepal’s cricket team faced another tough challenge in their T20 World Cup campaign, as they suffered a nine-wicket defeat against the West Indies at Wankhede Stadium. The loss marked the end of their hopes for progressing to the Super 8 stage of the tournament. Despite the setback, the fans remained loyal, showing their support for the team even after a series of disappointing results.
The match started with the West Indies winning the toss and choosing to bowl first. Captain Nicholas Hope explained his decision, citing the moisture on the pitch and its darker appearance. “It was nice to actually decide what I wanted to do for once,” he said after the match. If Nepal had won the toss, skipper Rohit Kumar Paudel mentioned that they would have also opted to bowl first, emphasizing the difficulty of batting first in such conditions.
Nepal struggled to find consistency with the bat. They lost their first wicket in the very first over and managed to reach 50 runs only in the 12th over. By the time they reached 73/6, it was clear that the team was under pressure. Dipendra Singh Airee and Sompal Kami formed a crucial partnership, but it wasn’t enough to change the outcome of the game.
Airee scored an impressive 58 off 47 balls, becoming only the second Nepali batsman to score a half-century in the T20 World Cup. He also became the first to cross 2,000 T20I runs during the match against England. Meanwhile, Kami remained not out at 26 off 15 deliveries, contributing to Nepal’s total of 133/8.
The West Indies’ batting lineup proved too strong for Nepal’s bowlers. Jason Holder took four wickets, while Akeal Hosein, Matthew Forde, Shamar Joseph, and Roston Chase each picked up one. Five of Nepal’s wickets fell due to catches, while others were lost through leg before wicket and clean bowling.
West Indies Dominate the Chase
From the start of the chase, the West Indies showed their intent to finish the game quickly. Brandon King hit the first ball of the innings for a boundary, signaling their aggressive approach. Although King was dismissed in the fifth over, captain Hope and Shimron Hetmyer continued to dominate the innings.
Hope remained not out at 61 off 44 balls, scoring three sixes and five fours. Hetmyer, on the other hand, smashed two sixes and four fours in 32 deliveries but narrowly missed a fifty by four runs. Their performance ensured a comfortable win for the West Indies, who became the first team to secure a spot in the Super 8.
Hope praised Nepal for their efforts, acknowledging that they are learning from their experiences. “As long as we are playing cricket at this level, we gotta make sure we are learning,” he said. He also emphasized the importance of full-member teams engaging with associate nations to help grow the game globally.
Concerns About Nepal’s Exposure
Despite their efforts, Nepal continues to struggle against stronger teams in the tournament. This has raised concerns about the team’s exposure and development. Darren Sammy, the West Indies’ head coach, recently highlighted the responsibility of major cricketing nations to play against associate teams to help them improve.
Afghanistan’s captain Rashid Khan also expressed interest in facing Nepal in the future. “It would be great,” Kami said after the match. “We are ready to host them.”
Nepal will now face Scotland in their final group match of the T20 World Cup, which is set to take place on Wednesday. The team will need to regroup and focus on improving their performance in the remaining games.
