The 2026 SCP, recently unveiled in Abuja, highlights several critical predictions. It anticipates a weak La Niña and a neutral phase of the El Niño–Southern Oscillation, which influences global weather patterns. According to the prediction, the rainy season is expected to start early to normally, with a normal to late cessation and normal to above-normal rainfall and season duration. Temperatures are likely to be above normal for most parts of the country.
The SCP also forecasts notable rainfall events in the early part of 2026, particularly in southern Nigeria, where rainfall during January and February may lead to localized flooding and waterlogging in low-lying areas. This scenario is already unfolding, with off-season heavy rainfall increasing flood risk in urban areas. For instance, parts of Lekki in Lagos State have experienced flash flooding, disrupting traffic and infrastructure.
Regional Variations and Impacts
The 2026 prediction indicates that the onset of the rainy season will occur earlier than normal in certain states, including Bayelsa, Rivers, Benue, Kogi, and others. However, Borno State is expected to experience a late onset. Regarding the cessation of the rainy season, most parts of the country will see a normal end, but some states, such as Lagos, Ogun, Anambra, Enugu, and others, are forecasted to have a delayed cessation.

Rainfall and Temperature Trends
Total rainfall is predicted to be below normal in parts of Katsina, Zamfara, Kwara, Oyo, and Ogun states, while above-normal rainfall is expected in parts of Borno, Sokoto, Kaduna, and others. Temperatures are likely to be above the long-term average nationwide, with both daytime and nighttime temperatures warmer than usual from January to May 2026.
The prediction also highlights potential dry spells, with severe dry conditions expected in Oyo and Ogun states during March-May. A moderate dry spell may occur in southern and central states, while a severe dry spell lasting up to 21 days is anticipated in the northern and central regions during June-July-August. The Little Dry Season
The Little Dry Season (LDS), commonly known as the August Break, is expected to commence between July 26 and 30. In other regions, such as Ondo, parts of Kwara, and Edo States, the intensity is expected to be moderate.
