Reflections on Nigeria’s Journey and Kogi State’s Development
Chief Edward David Onoja, who once served as the Chief of Staff to former Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State, has had a significant role in the state’s political landscape. He is currently a member representing the North Central region on the board of the South-East Development Commission (SEDC). In an interview, he shared his insights on various topics, including the development of Kogi State, his relationship with former leaders, and national issues.
The Journey of Nigeria
Nigeria recently celebrated its 65th independence anniversary, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s history. According to Chief Onoja, this journey has been one of resilience. The country has faced numerous challenges, including reforms, inflationary pressures, security issues, and even a civil war. Despite these obstacles, Nigeria has shown a determination to rise and progress.
Onoja emphasized the need for inclusive growth, job creation for the youth, stronger security measures, and credible institutions that can translate national reforms into daily relief for citizens. As a nation at 65, it is expected to have excelled in managing domestic needs and embracing advancements in technology such as robotics, artificial intelligence, and space science.
Kogi State’s Progress
Kogi State, which celebrated its 34th anniversary, has evolved into the Confluence State, strategically located between ten states and rich in human capital and natural resources. Onoja highlighted the potential for Kogi to become a regional powerhouse by deepening fiscal discipline, sustaining investments in education and healthcare, and strengthening security.
He noted that 28 out of the 32 mineral resources in Nigeria are found in commercial quantities in Kogi State. The recent procurement of mining licenses by the state government is a positive step towards increasing internally generated revenue and providing basic amenities and job opportunities for the youth.
Reconciliation and Political Ambitions
Recent efforts by Onoja to promote reconciliation have sparked speculation about his political ambitions, particularly regarding the Senate. However, he clarified that reconciliation is a civic and moral obligation for him as a lover of Christ. His focus is on lowering political tensions, improving collaboration, and fostering unity among stakeholders.
Onoja expressed deep appreciation for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who appointed him twice after his service in Kogi. He emphasized his commitment to supporting the president’s Renewed Hope Agenda and working diligently for the nation.
Performance Index and Security Challenges
Regarding the performance index for Kogi State, Onoja stressed the importance of transparency and credible data. While independent trackers provide useful yardsticks, true measurement lies in whether lives are tangibly improving. He believes in the potential for society to evolve and surpass previous achievements.
Kogi State has witnessed an increase in crime, and Onoja proposed a layered security strategy. This includes intelligence-led joint operations, structured community policing, technology integration, accelerated judicial processes, and targeted youth empowerment in hotspots.
Relationship with Former Governor
There is a perception of a gap between Onoja and former Governor Yahaya Bello. However, Onoja denied any political rift, emphasizing that public office changes schedules and priorities but does not erase respect for shared relationships. He highlighted the importance of service to the people over divisions.
Changing Political Narratives
The recent gubernatorial election in Kogi East saw a massive vote against Onoja’s party, APC. To change the narrative, he suggested returning to basics, such as measurable delivery of projects, transparent budgeting, and consistent communication. Rebuilding trust is essential for shifting political trust and voting patterns.
Assessment of Governor Ododo
Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo’s administration has focused on workers’ welfare and reducing the state’s debt burden. Onoja acknowledged the gains but called for tighter budget execution, stronger social protection, and more aggressive local job creation. Governance is judged by service delivered at the ward level.
Future Political Landscape
With the 2027 elections approaching, coalition-building is part of democracy. Onoja believes that performance outshines permutations. If the APC continues to deliver on security, macroeconomic stability, and tangible community-level projects, alliances by the opposition will matter less.
Safety in Transportation
Transportation accidents in Kogi State, both on land and waterways, have raised concerns. Onoja urged safety measures, such as ensuring life jackets for passengers and seat belts for drivers. He emphasized the importance of guidelines and safety procedures for local government areas affected by riverine regions.
