A Journey of Purpose and Passion

Award-winning actress and producer, Osas Ighodaro, is making waves beyond the entertainment industry. Recently recognized as one of the 10 Gatekeeper Champions by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for her work through the JoyfulJoy Foundation, Osas is using her star power to drive meaningful change. In this exclusive conversation, she shares insights on turning personal loss into advocacy, her journey in Nollywood, and her global aspirations.

Recognition and Humility

The JoyfulJoy Foundation has been named among the 10 global Gatekeepers Champions by the Gates Foundation. This recognition holds deep significance for Osas. “This recognition is deeply humbling,” she says. “Personally, it affirms the years of passion and sacrifice behind the JoyfulJoy Foundation. Professionally, it validates our work on a global stage and opens new doors for collaboration to create even greater impact.”

Overcoming Challenges

The foundation has been active for 13 years, but its early days were not without challenges. “The toughest early challenge was convincing people that a small foundation could make a big difference,” Osas recalls. “Limited resources and scepticism were real hurdles.” However, what keeps her motivated today is the lives they have touched. “The fact that families no longer have to fear malaria is what fuels me every day.”

Turning Pain into Purpose

The foundation was born from a personal tragedy — the loss of Osas’s sister to malaria. “Losing my sister to malaria remains the most painful moment of my life,” she reflects. “But that tragedy ignited my resolve to ensure fewer families endure the same.” Through the foundation, they have distributed thousands of mosquito nets, run awareness campaigns, and supported healthcare programs that have reduced preventable deaths. “Each saved life honours her memory.”

Fighting Malaria in Nigeria

Despite decades of efforts, malaria still claims lives in Nigeria. “It’s heartbreaking that malaria still claims lives after decades,” Osas says. While the government and stakeholders are making efforts, she believes more can be done, especially in community education, stronger healthcare systems, and equitable access to preventive tools. “Collaboration is key if we are to win this battle.”

A Powerful Collaboration

Osas recently co-executive-produced a movie with Burna Boy and his mother, Bose Ogulu. “That project was powerful because it merged art with advocacy,” she explains. “Storytelling through film is a way to spark conversations beyond borders.” Working with Burna Boy and his mother was an inspiring experience. “They bring creativity and vision that align with my own passion for meaningful projects.”

Lessons from a Family Bond

Osas shares a warm bond with Burna Boy’s family. “Our relationship grew organically from mutual respect,” she says. “They’ve taught me that success is rooted in discipline, authenticity, and never forgetting where you come from.”

Balancing Creativity and Business

As both an actress and a producer, Osas balances the creative and business sides of film. “Acting stretches my emotions, while producing stretches my strategy,” she notes. “Balancing both is challenging but rewarding. I’ve learned that telling stories requires both heart and structure.”

Fitness and Mental Well-being

Fitness and mental health play a crucial role in her ability to deliver powerful performances. “Fitness and mental health are non-negotiables for me,” she says. “They give me the energy, clarity, and emotional depth to fully embody the characters I play.”

A Blessing and a Sacrifice

Relocating to Nigeria was a blessing for Osas. “Nigeria gave me a deeper sense of purpose,” she explains. “It’s not just about fame, it’s about connection, culture, and contributing to home.” The sacrifices? “Privacy, and sometimes, comfort. But the blessings outweigh them.”

Nollywood’s Global Aspirations

Nollywood is growing globally, and Osas believes the industry must invest more in training, distribution, and storytelling that resonates universally while staying authentic. “We already have the talent and creativity; now it’s about increased infrastructure and vision.”

The Real Osas

Many fans see the glamorous side of Osas, but there’s more to her. “People often see the glam, but I’m actually quite goofy and down-to-earth,” she says. “My close circle knows me as someone who loves to laugh and just be myself.”

A Different Path

If she weren’t an actress, Osas would likely be in public health or philanthropy full-time. “My passion has always been to help people and spread joy.”

Defining Happiness

For Osas, happiness is balance: being present with her daughter, pursuing meaningful work, and staying grounded in faith and gratitude.

Navigating Life’s Roles

As a mother, actress, philanthropist, and producer, balancing these roles is a constant effort. “I don’t have it all figured out, but I prioritise what matters most in each season. I’ve learned to give myself grace.”

Bold Career Risks

Her boldest career risk was relocating to Nigeria and chasing her dreams. “It was scary, but it is paying off beautifully.”

A Global Perspective

Working across Nigeria and the US has shaped her outlook on life, culture, and the roles she chooses. “It’s given me a global lens. I see the strengths in both cultures, and it helps me choose roles that bridge worlds and tell richer stories.”

A Message for Her Daughter

Osas hopes her daughter learns that strength and kindness go hand in hand and that she can achieve anything she puts her heart into.

Future Vision

In the next decade, Osas envisions the JoyfulJoy Foundation scaling to more countries, innovating with technology for healthcare delivery, and continuing to inspire global action against preventable diseases. “And above all, I pray that by then malaria will be alleviated, and we will live in a world finally free from its grip.”
